I am going to the DR in May and I'm trying to find quiet budget accommodation. This has proven pretty difficult. Everything I find online is for all inclusive expensive resorts. I will be in Santo Domingo for a day or two and then open to anything after that. I've heard that once you arrive the backpacker spots are easy to find but with only a week I would like to have at 1east a specific beach picked out.

Has anyone been recently that might have any suggestions on how to approach the DR? I guess I'm looking to recreate the inexpensive and non-resort experience of SE Asia in my own backyard.

I only spent a week in SD and stayed at the Hotel Nicolas Nader in the Zona Colonial which was a bit pricey but very nice. It's a 400 year old building thats also an art gallery and has a relaxing courtyard - great for drinking cold Presidentes and smoking hand rolled cigars in peace!
For budget accomodations on the fly I'd say check with a taxi/concho driver and see what they recommend. You can get pretty much anything you want in the DR but need to keep your wits about you.
I heard Boca Chica was great but never made it there.
