I'm looking to hit Cuba in a couple months... here's my situation... I live in Amsterdam, but have a US passport. I can get a flight from here to Cuba on Iberia, avoiding travel through the states altogether. However, I also have enough FF miles to get a free flight from A'dam to Mexico, and then just buy another ticket to Cuba from there. Going with the FF route means having a layover in the US, though. So... should I shell out the loot to avoid having to deal with potential problems flying through the US, or the cheap route. And, if I do go the Iberia route, I could get more FF miles... but would it be problematic to try to claim credit for a flight to Cuba, as my program is through AA?

I'm not sure what problems you would have with a connection in the US, other than the usual BS we flyers put up with every time we fly. You are simply going to Mexico. Last I heard, Some of the bigger carriers were tattle taling to the US when US citizens flew from Mexico to Cuba. I'm not sure about the small outfits that fly these routes.
And, you specifically can NOT credit miles to AA for any Cuba flights. http://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/ViewMileageProgramsPa...ntagePartnersContent |
