Budget Puerto Rico? Does it exist? I'm looking to take trip to PR for a week. I haven't found many hostels on line, only a few. Everything else is pretty expensive from floofy doofy hotels to rental properties.

But I have found that there is camping. But how safe would that be for a solo female? Or should I stick to the few hostels and do side trips from them?

What would be a good per diem for PR -- ie. what are the general costs of food/lodging/transportation?

What are the best areas and best beaches? Where's the good (beginner) surf spots (not that I can really surf, but want to give it a try again)?

Any other advice and recommendations for PR?

Thanks!!

There's this couple on couchsurfing who have the highest rating. They're in San Juan, I believe. When I went to PR, I emailed back and forth with them and was going to stay, but at the last minute, I ended up going for work. So I didn't have to pay at all.

I can't remember their names, but if you search PR, they'll come up on the first page. They were very friendly & welcoming. And very gratis!

it is difficult to find budget accomodations in Puerto Rico. However, they do exist. Check out the Lonely Planet guide and look in the Ocean Park area. The Holiday Inn Express in Condado is relatively inexpensive about $160 per night, including full-breakfast every morning.

Hey there Marisa

I went with a few friends to Puerto Rico last year. And I would suggest staying at

Andalucia
http://www.andalucia-puertorico.com

The owner are very chill and extremely helpful. My trip came up to about 500 dollars and that was including air fare, food, and car rental. But I had split the cost with 2 other people.

Remember there is no sales tax in Puerto Rico. And jetblue has some really cheap flights out there.

Slight correction. There IS a 5.5% sales tax in PR now. It started in November of last year while I was there.
