Hi all, My BF and I are going to Jamaica the beginning of March, little did I know that happens to be pre-spring break
ACK! I think we may have to camp a few nights to keep our costs down...
I heard you can ask people to camp on their front lawns? and on beaches. Is this true?!
Or is it is possible to find a place for two people for $20-$30 a night?
Thanks booties, the tickets are bought, I just need to figure this out. peace out j

As far as camping on lawns/beaches, just ask a cab driver. They know everything.

If you want your plans to be a little more concrete than that, I can vouch for THIS PLACE in Montego bay. I stayed there for a week in early March last year; it was very affordable and I had no problems, mon. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

You have to be pretty careful in Jamaica. It is probably THE most dangerous island in the Caribbean. A friend of mine was a cop there and they have a really high mortality rate there for cops. So be careful where you go and don't go to strange places at night. And that's what the locals say too, not just for tourists.

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

Do NOT camp in Jamaica. The entire country is dangerous, and tourists are targeted. Look, I love that part of the world, and it was a far different place twenty years ago, but now it is just scary. You camp, expect the worst.

Hmmm, I definitely agree that Jamaica is a place to be very cautious, especially around Kingston, or the major tourist areas. But, in my twenties, I traveled there solo two separate times for ten days each. I used the local buses, and stayed in family-run hotels. But, yes, I did get hassled a bit, but the very kind people there also really look out for you. When I was in Negril, I couldn't go anywhere without the nice people from the hotel knowing exactly where I'd been all day. I didn't run across anyone who camped while I was there, but there are very reasonably priced local hotels that are safe. Just use commons sense, keep yourself conscious, avoid dark quiet places at night and watch who you befriend. And I found that when being bothered, a polite, but firm, "No thank you" followed by "Respect" was a great way to close out.
