Awesome fares to PR from NYC on JetBlue have got me thinking.

Can anyone tell me the best beaches in PR for snorkeling or diving? What the are the places to avoid?

Thanks!

I concure salmo99 Vieques and there is no reason think farther. I must admit I regret never making it to Culebra while I was there. BioBay a must. let me know if you need a great guide for the Bio trip.. he's local and a hoot.

Yeah, Vieques and Culebra are the best and the hottest places for snorkeling/diving, don't discount the west coast of Puerto Rico. There are some great, easily accessible reefs right off the beach in a lot of places. Crashboat beach has some interesting snorkeling/diving around the piers. There is what is supposed to a fabulous wall dive but we haven't done that yet. Also, Descheo Island, about 24 miles off the west coast is supposed to be a great dive trip. Contact Aquatica Dive Shop near Aguadilla (http://netdial.caribe.net/~aquatica/) to more info.

I'd keep an eye on the news re: the protests, gov't shut-downs etc. there. Nothing at all like the unstable and/or unsafe situations elsewhere in the world to be sure, but something to be aware of, checking on how travel-related services, businesses, etc. are affected.

If you go make sure to try their sangria drinks that hit the spot on the beach. Have fun!

Just curious -- how is Puerto Rico on budget travel? Is it expensive? Mid-range?

OK, so this doesn't actually address the question of where the cool spots are, or what type of budget you'll need. The owners of this place in PR contacted me last week, and I think they signed up for a BnA hostel listing. This looks like a sweet place to stay, especially is you have a group of friends (their main guesthouse can sleep 6+ for $175/night). Check it out:

Skyehiker..

There is nothing to be concerened about as far as protest. Vieques is a awesome place to visit. Culebra is another one of my favorite spots. I live on St. Thomas USVI and go to Puerto Rico every chance I get.
