Hello, I'm going to be staying in Montego Bay starting at the end of the month. I was wondering if there is any recommendations on places to stay. I'm looking for someplace with a kitchenette perferably.

As well, how is the security there?

Thanks

Hi, Willie, and welcome to the boards! Smile

Check out the hostels & hotels in Montego Bay (each description should tell you whether there is a kitchen available).

Good luck!

Ciao,
Jessie

If you review the posts on jamaica, you see plenty of warnings. Crime is a huge problem there, and tourists are targeted. I suggest extreme caution, and suggest almost anywhere else in the Caribbean as an alternative.

Montego Bay is a pretty sketchy place for sure, I think I got extorted like three times in the first hour off the plane. I'm not usually easily intimidated either, bt at the time I was only 16, it was my first international travel experiences, and everybody was 7 feet tall with fists the size of my head (seemes that way anyways).

If you end up not having as much fun as you hoped and want to try somewhere a little more laid back but still close, take a cab ride out to Falmouth (the next town east). If you go another 7 K east or so past there you will find some nice cozy little hotels/B&Bs right along a beautiful beach that also contains a stretch of bamboo huts occupied by a small community of genuine, laid back rastafarians. It's a nice break from all the gangsters Coke dealers and pimps you'll end up hanging out with in Mo'Bay.

edit: oops, a bit late on that reply I guess.

Well, he'll figure it out...

hi there,

Actually, I just went there last year (me and another female) and we were fine. I would say 9 out of 10 people were super friendly and very welcoming. I think that as long as you take precautions (no dark alleys, wandering around at night alone etc) just like you would anywhere else you will be ok. Of course this is my personal experience and I wouldn't think twice about returning there -- I had a wonderful time (went to YS Falls, Appleton RUm tour, the Cliffs). I also went to Negril -- awesome place.

Enjoy JA is very laid back and there's lots to see, hear, and taste!
