Scroll down to the stews, ok?

Well, I'm in love.

So I wanted to post a thread about Korean food here on BNA. Of course, first I did a search to see if there already was a thread. There is one called "What is your favorite Asian food?"

What I read there shocked and astounded me. Braslvr's experience with Korean food amazes me. I didn't think it was possible(he hated it), and I'll explain why.

Then I almost fell off my chair when Mina Olen said there was so much meat! Really? Interesting thread.

Anyway, I found this great site and posted the URL, it's got a bunch of pictures of dishes. The first section is, indeed, meat. But scroll down to the rest.

I'm so in love with Korean food, I wish I could eat it every day. I want to marry it.

The food that I eat here in the Philippines at the Korean restaurant is just vegetables and spices, basicly. I LOVE Korean spices. They are not just hot, they are tasty. Like majorly tasty! Now, I wonder how Koreans can tolerate food in other countries.

Sure enough, the students here can taste all the salt in anything, because they are not used to eating salt laden food, just spicy, tasty food!

I think that Braslvr had some sugary dishes which is unfortunate. Because Korean spices are out of this world.

Korean food is very healthy, full of vegetables and prepared with spices that aid in digestion.

Kimchee has been declared one of the healthiest dishes in the world, and I'd say it's one of the tastiest also.

I eat here at my friend's restaurant, and the students here say that the rastaurant ain't that great. But for me, it's good enough and I think that means that I would LOVE food in Korea and a Korean restaurant in Manila.

So at our table we've got dishes all over the table and knock back the Soju, which is actually disgusting but fun...and beer(come on, you don't need a link for beer, do ya?)and we discuss life and stuff and things. There's just nothing better than this.

I used to always order Dolcet Bibimbop, which is a rice and vegetable dish. I thought, yeah, you guys put a drug in this. But it's the red pepper paste that my mouth is enjoying. The other day I had the shredded beef soup, and it made my eyes water, but not in an uncomfortable way. That was the best soup I've ever had.

This food is SO healthy. Mostly vegetables and spices.
My dream is that I could treat the whole BNA community to a dinner like this, all together, letting bygones be bygones...pass the Soju...
You know what? I'm in love. I'm looking for a Korean husband now.

From what I saw whilst in Korea, that is the last thing you need, and was the single biggest reason I disliked the country.

I agree the food is very healthy, but it screams for a bit of salt, and never any to be found. Can't remember the name of it, but there is one soup which uses some type of fermented soybean paste as it's base. It's loaded with straw mushrooms, bits of other vegies, and usually clams or mussels in their shells. It was one of the few things I liked, and one of the few which was a bit salty... hmm, connection here. I would eat that again anytime. Ahh, I see it on your link. Dwenjang Chigae. Just substitute straw mushrooms for the beef. Some fresh made kimchi once or twice a month would be ok too.

Wow, my curiosity is sky high now~!

I'm glad you found at least one thing that you liked, and it sounds like your experience in Korea overall (Boshintang thread) was less than stellar! I guess I'll visit there someday, but wouldn't want to live there (?)

Kimchi jigae (sp?)--soup with a base of Korean miso and red pepper paste, with kimchi added along with whatever else takes your fancy (small mushrooms, tofu, pork, cabbage, etc.) Yum, so simple to make and yet so very, very delicious.

Rose Mary...I've heard from all the students that Kimchee itself is very hard to make. Korean people eat this three times a day, yet my students laugh when I ask them if they can make it. Not only do they eat it 3 times a day, but Koreans assure me that almost *all* Koreans have 2 refrigerators in their house, one especially for Kimchee.

So the laugh is not very encouraging. (And they don't laugh simply because their mom does everything...it's hard to make.)

Good point--I should have said, after you buy the ready-made kimchi, the ready-made miso, and the ready-made pepper paste, THEN kimchi jigae is the easiest thing in the world to make!

No, I've never tried making my own kimchi. A neighbor of mine, though, makes her own miso, and it's delicious.
