I am looking to get a jar of vegemite from a store in New York City...that can include brooklyn, queens or manhattan...i have found some bars that give it free with food, but I want a jar of it...it is currently banned from supermarkets and stuff by the FDA but apparently you can still find it in expat stores...help!

Josh, try Kalustyan's in Curry Hill. It's got EVERY KIND of food from around the world, perhaps you will get lucky with the vegemite.

I also hear the rumor (based on a google search) that it is in the Associated Supermarket on 2nd Ave near 49th St.

not sure if they have Cost Plus, World Market in NYC, but when i lived in CO i shopped there and they stocked vegemite! I loved that shop... made a weekly visit there for my SA fix of food!

it is banned because there is too much of a particular ingredient that is allowed in some foods and not others...it is good stuff

whole foods has it! i have seen it on the aisle in the european foods section!

Yeah, Cost Plus has it, and they also have Tim Tams!

The Trade Fair Supermarket down the street from my apartment had Marmite last time I looked. I can't stand either of those -mites, so don't know if whether it's Vege- or Mar- makes a difference. I'll check for it and let you know its price and availibility if you want.

From what I see, the FDA is fervently denying the ban on Vegemite. The rumours seem to date from 2006, so if supermarkets used to stock it, they should do so again.

There is certainly a difference between Vegemite and Marmite! The former is likely to be a lot harder to find in the UK and US, but I would expect wholefood stores to have it.

OK, I’ll be truthful: I used more Vegemite than that, but if this is your first time, you’ll want to lose your Vegemite virginity with less, rather than more of the spread. Trust me. Vegemite and Marmite are both available pretty widely throughout the city. They do cost a little more than they do in the UK, but they’re still not expensive, and a jar will last weeks or months, so consider the price a long-ish term investment. Fairway has a 4 oz. jar of Vegemite for $3.89, and Amish Market has both Vegemite and Marmite for a little bit more (around $5.00 a jar). I am also a little tempted to tout the fact that Vegemite is kosher, but if you’re the kind of person who mixes bagels and Marmite, you probably don’t take too kindly to religious restrictions on food-pairing. Still, I wonder if there’s a bracha for Vegemite… .

Alan, I've had this question a number of times. I have seen Vegemite in the "Austrian" (sic) section at the Associated (supermarket) on 2nd Avenue near 49th Street. I think that's the cheapest available here - check out the new Letters From New York OZ Stuff page.
