Sells "travel" by the gram |
I am looking to get a jar of vegemite from a store in New York City...that can include brooklyn, queens or manhattan...i have found some bars that give it free with food, but I want a jar of it...it is currently banned from supermarkets and stuff by the FDA but apparently you can still find it in expat stores...help!
I love it, and miss it, instant hangover cure India, UAE, Africa next, follow me! I'm 24, why isn't 100 countries and 7 continents realistic in a lifetime...40 and 5 down... |

Why is it banned by the FDA? Vegemite scares me. I will have to try it sometime though

Josh, try Kalustyan's in Curry Hill. It's got EVERY KIND of food from around the world, perhaps you will get lucky with the vegemite.
I also hear the rumor (based on a google search) that it is in the Associated Supermarket on 2nd Ave near 49th St. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + "It was the most efficient campaign I have seen in my 20 years in politics." -- Sam Burrell, alderman of Chicago's West Side 29th Ward, on the phenomeal Project Vote! voter drive of 1992 which was responsible for adding 150,000 black voters to the Chicago rolls. This helped Bill Clinton and Carol Mosley Braun win Illinois in the '92 elections. The project was spearheaded by an unknown 31-year-old lawyer and community organizer by the name of Barack Obama. http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/January-1993/Vote-of-Confidence/ http://www.brklyn-christina.blogspot.com |

it is banned because there is too much of a particular ingredient that is allowed in some foods and not others...it is good stuff

The Trade Fair Supermarket down the street from my apartment had Marmite last time I looked. I can't stand either of those -mites, so don't know if whether it's Vege- or Mar- makes a difference. I'll check for it and let you know its price and availibility if you want.
The store's here. __________________________ "Suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either." |

From what I see, the FDA is fervently denying the ban on Vegemite. The rumours seem to date from 2006, so if supermarkets used to stock it, they should do so again.
There is certainly a difference between Vegemite and Marmite! The former is likely to be a lot harder to find in the UK and US, but I would expect wholefood stores to have it. |

Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago |
Greeks have Astoria, Russians Brighton Beach and Guyanese Richmond Hill, but the New York area's roughly 15,000 Australians have had to make do in far-flung fashion. No worries, mate! They congregate at restaurants in Lower Manhattan like Eight Mile Creek and the Sunburnt Cow, particularly when rugby or cricket is on the telly, or at tiny Ruby's, which has the proper flat white (an almost frothless cappuccino). They head to Van Cortlandt Park for footy - a version of Gaelic football.
"You can talk in your own language and enjoy yourself and feel like you're back home," said Jim Ferguson, an administrator at Toys "R" Us who was enjoying a beer the other day at Eight Mile Creek as well as the dry, laconic humor of the Australian owner, bartenders and patrons. "You're with your mates." http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/07/nyregion/07pockets.html OK, I’ll be truthful: I used more Vegemite than that, but if this is your first time, you’ll want to lose your Vegemite virginity with less, rather than more of the spread. Trust me. Vegemite and Marmite are both available pretty widely throughout the city. They do cost a little more than they do in the UK, but they’re still not expensive, and a jar will last weeks or months, so consider the price a long-ish term investment. Fairway has a 4 oz. jar of Vegemite for $3.89, and Amish Market has both Vegemite and Marmite for a little bit more (around $5.00 a jar). I am also a little tempted to tout the fact that Vegemite is kosher, but if you’re the kind of person who mixes bagels and Marmite, you probably don’t take too kindly to religious restrictions on food-pairing. Still, I wonder if there’s a bracha for Vegemite… . http://www.nycnosh.com/?p=55 think Dean & Deluca has some. Check the main location at SOHO....or better yet, give them a call http://www.yelp.com/topic/new-york-vegemite-hunt Alan, I've had this question a number of times. I have seen Vegemite in the "Austrian" (sic) section at the Associated (supermarket) on 2nd Avenue near 49th Street. I think that's the cheapest available here - check out the new Letters From New York OZ Stuff page. http://www.letterfromnewyork.com/letterfromny23.html |
