Before I visited Thailand, I had eaten Thai food ~6 times at various Thai restaurants in the US. Never cared much for it. Way too sweet, and not very spicy either. I was concerned that I wouldn't care for the food in Thailand...
Man, was that fear ever unfounded! Thai food IN Thailand is by far the best food I've ever eaten. It blew my former favorite, Mexico, down to second place. I've been there about 8 times now in the past 3 years, and after the second time, I've found my favorite dishes. These are the staples that I live on while there. 1) Kaeng Pa. "jungle curry" "red curry soup" One of the spiciest Thai dishes I'm told. It's a vegetable soup with your choice of meats or seafood. The combo of flavors makes this my favorite dish in the world. I eat it at least every other day there. 2) Kra Pao. "meat or seafood stir-fry with hot basil and chilis" 3) Larb Pla Dook. "minced catfish salad w/dried and fresh chilis, onion, lime and fresh herbs" 4) Kaeng Kiaw Waan Gai. "green curry chicken w/vegetables" 5) Khao Pad Gai. "chicken fried rice" 6) Tom Yam Kung. "hot & sour soup with shrimp" 7) Som Tam. "spicy papaya salad" Thanks to Madhu for reminding me. I don't think I've ever seen this in a sit-down restaurant. It is strictly street-food fare, at least the style I like is.. I try at least one new thing almost every day to mix things up, and 95% has been excellent, but this is what I live on for weeks at a time. Since many here have been to Thailand, what did YOU eat and love there? |
