All your boots are belong to me! |
EB,
I like Knob Creek too, though Jim Beam White Label is my favorite bourbon. Jack Daniels is at an unfair disadvantage, its not bourbon. Bourbon has to come from Bourbon County Kentucky, JD is Tennessee Whiskey. Its a sour-mash (bacterial) corn whiskey that doesn't spend as much time in new oak as bourbon. I wouldn't personally say its panther piss, but I wouldn't drink it either if a bourbon was available. If you haven't tried rye whisky, seek out Jim Beam Yellow label. Its fantastic stuff. On eiswein, or Vin du Glaciere, I don't necessarily think there's a season for drinking it, or buying it, I recently had it this summer with some fresh strawberries, but I wouldn't hesitate to drink it in winter with.... well anything really. I think most of the decent wine stores carry it, the one I had that I thought was fantastic was Iniskillin Vidal (Canada). Good luck finding it, and for that matter, paying for it. |

EB - Eiswein is available year round here in Bavaria, but the stocks get a bit thin in Summer. Also, it pays to experiment, as I've tried different eisweins at around the same price and one has been great - full of aroma and flavor, while the other was mostly just sweet. You'll know when you've struck a good one because the scent is so rich and powerful.
I just got back from Prague, where I drank a lot of Pilsener Urquell - the original restaurant that served it is in Prague. Also many, many restaurants have their own in-house breweries. I tried coffee beer, banana beer, nettle beer (green and not so good), champagne beer, sour cherry and a variety of dark and regular ones. Prague is more beer-crazy than Bavaria. I couldn't believe it. They also have dishes like pork knee cooked in black beer. Also at one place they served a four liter beer in a tall glass tube with a brass spigott at the bottom. Like something out of Jules Verne. Picked up a bottle of Absynth there too, but will save it for some ocassion. The journey is my home |

Okay, how about 'Mad Dog', a Polish concoction consisting of a large amount of vodka (first in the glass) topped with a small amount of raspberry syrup, then topped with a splash of lemonade and finally Tabasco (lots of it), all in separate layers, i.e. don't mix, don't even stir, let alone shake! It sounds disgusting, but it's delicious, and like a good Indian curry, blows your throat off

I like the sound of that one! I want to try it.
maybe we can compile osme of these drinks somewhere on BnA and have a Traveller's Cocktail Recipe & Drinks section. And a food section... :-) I also tried a specialty of Bamberg, Bavaria the other day - Smoked Beer, or Raucherbier. I bought it by mistake without looking too closely at the label. It's like drinking a beer that tastes of smoked ham. I wouldn't drink it again, except to remind myself of the odd flavor. But I recommend trying it at least once. I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave. |

I'm sure this thread will be preserved for the benefit of the inevitable Bootsnall "International House of Undeniably Rough Liquor" (IHURL). Coming soon to a dodgy strip-mall near you.

Whem my housemate was in Brazil, she drank a drink that was basically straight vodka. You take limes, cut them up into slices and fill a glass. You then put some sugar in the bottom of the glass, and pour vodka straight into it. The lime juice and the sugar get rid of the strong alcohol taste, making it a nice lime flavoured drink.
We're going to use up our leftover vodka on those strong drinks before moving out. ______________________________ "Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavour." -- Sir Ernest Shackleton |

Add some mint to that vodka/sugar/lime mix and you almost have yourself a mojito.
I brought a bottle of Absinth back from Prague - now how to get it into Oz... I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave. |

Borderland,
Rauchbier, especially Weizen Rauchbier is really good with Barbecue. |

I guess it would suit BBQ since its a BBQ in a bottle itself. Maybe you could pour it over some steaks while they grill too.

A couple of things I drink in Cyprus are Keo beer (again nothing special but a nice brew) and Zivania.
Zivania is a strong spirit which is made exclusively on the island. Some of the best commercially available stuff is made by the monks in the Kykkos monastery, although the home made stuff can be absolutely lethal. Definitely one to be treated with extreme caution. |

Still looking for Carmen Sandiego |
Miami: Anytime i'm in Miami I always veg out on the beaches and in the hotel with friends and sip on malibu and pineapple juice or dr pepper and parrot bay.
New Orleans: Can't think of New Orleans with out remembering the Hand Grenade! That tore me up and with in 2 hours of checking into my hotel on St Charles I was already out of commission. Rome: I was 15 yrs old and I ordered a 7up at the bar downstairs in the hotel and the bartender handed me a 7 and 7. My mom told me it was ok if I drank it but I took 1 sip and kindly said NO WAY. Now a days I wouldn't pass that up for anything Olympia (Greece): The same trip as when I was in Rome... I was 15 and drinking Ouzo with a tour group outside of our hotel room. Very pleasant memory Prague: Stella Artois was everywhere and it is now my favorite beer. It always takes me back to sitting in the cafe sipping on a Stella. This was also my first incounter with Pilsner Urquell. I never tried Absinthe while in the Czech Republic but I did sneak a couple of bottles home Mexico: Who doesn't think of tequila when they think of Mexico? We did the traditional shot upon arrival into Cozumel via ship. ________________________________ When the son of the diposed King of Nigeria emails you DIRECTLY asking for help, you help. Mexico - "Michelada"
This is a terrific variation on beer, especially refreshing on a hot summer day. Take a pint glass, circle the rim with salt--or even better salt and ground red pepper, but easy with the cayenne! Fill the glass about 1/2-3/4 with ice. Squeeze fresh lime juice till you get about a finger or two worth in the glass. Fill it up with a Negra Modelo or comparable medium bodied Mexican beer (man I love Mexican beer). Top it with a fresh lime. ¡Saludos! Caribbean - "Mojitos" Rum, mint leaves, lime juice, club soda, lime wedge, ice, little syrup sweetener. Goes down easy. |

Obviously, I missed the very obvious in my previous reply.
Guinness, which is only properly enjoyed in Ireland. Like fine wine, it does not travel well. |

Sicily - Limonella in a chilled glass on a hot day. Sweet & sour liquer that is quite refreshing.
Malta - Kinney. Non-alcoholic soda that tastes like over ripe oranges with nutmeg/cinnamon. Karin, an Alaskan working in Durango, CO ~ There is more to life than increasing its speed ~ Ghandi ><[[[[º>.·**`·.**.·**`·.* ><[[[[º> |

Czech Republic: Becherovka -- a delicious and healthy alcoholic blend of more than 20 herbs. highly potent. Drink it as a shot or with tonic water, which is called Beton for Becherovka + tonic. Made in Karlovy Vary, the recipe is only known by one or two people on the planet. You can get it everywhere in the CR but if you visit karlovy vary, take a tour of the Becherovka Museum and enjoy a few free shots at the end of the tour.
The Czechs also have a strange drink combination. Red wine and coca-cola. It may sound disgusting but if you have ever had cheap red wine in the CR, you will understand. |

Holds PhD in Packing |
Well, I got onto this thread kinda late. First about the bourbons, I would say nothing as quite as nice as Bookers. though, they all are made by the Jim Beam Distillery. Second, Gluwein. I love the stuff. I was in germany, and czech in january, and lived on this stuff. Can't wait to try grog. Also on this same trip, Absinth! this stuff is great. though I wouldn't recomend drinking it more then once a week.
for me, the best drinking, has been on the beach of jost van dyke, in the British Virgin Islands, Painkiller!! its a combinations of orange, pineapple, nad coconut juice, with nutmeg and Pussers Rum. aslo, Dark and stormy's goslings rum, and ginger beer. great thread, let's have more |

Those sound good :-)
Bundy Rum is just about an icon here in Australia now. With Cola is standard. Nothing else has jumped out at me here except there's a lot of Crown Lager being drunk in Perth. I try to help out with that a bit. 'I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.' J. Handey |

Lost in Place |
Borderland just reminded me about a drink I could have included when I replied to this thread right at the start of it - it's now called a 'Blob' (formerly known as White Wine All In). Here in Northern England it is sold in 'Blob Shops' (formerly known as Yates's Wine Lodges).
How to make: Take a a tall glass and add - Large measure of Yates's Australian Sweet White Wine 1 teaspoon sugar Good chunk of lemon Stir these ingredients together and top up with hot water. Excellent for medicinal purposes! |
