Slovenia - Slivovitz. Their tasty version of moonshine. First thing upon arrival, your host will charmingly get you to drink some several shots from a private stash he distilled himself. Hold on to your ass.

Dallas - I Ain't Lyin'. Some sort of secret dark tequila, a splash of lime, in a glass rimmed with a mix of sugar and cayenne.

Mexico - Superior (cerveza). Snorkeling while tipsy, jumping of a bluff into a small pool while slightly more than tipsy.

Morocco - Mint tea. No, it doesn't have alcohol, but with the way it's poured and enjoyed, it's certainly intoxicating. And in the sheer volume you're offered, the sugar buzz alone will cause a hangover.

Cheers!

"Garifuna Drink" The most exotic I've encountered, typical of the Garifunas in the honduras caribean. it tastes awful, and is made of cane alcohol with tons of strange seeds and leafs. You feel like a victim after tasting it, but after finding some more victims its really cool. (each victim in turn seeks even more victims.. at the end its a wild laughter!)

Chicha in peru, especially while Tinkar ( a toast to mother earth ceremony)

Pisco Sour in chile eand peru, made with egg and pisco (local firewater)

Orujo in spain.. a sort of local schnapps, there are many kinds, (honey, herbs, bitter)

Mezcal in the mexican state of Oaxaca (tequila from that region.. the famous onw with the tiny worm in it.. its good luck if you get the worm, and must drink it) Crazy

Absinth of course.. after a bottle with a friend you do wake up with a slight paranoied hangover!

cheers!

Tauk - from Bali. Local 'beer' made from palm sap. Looks cloudy white. Tastes like rotten vegetables and old socks.

Brem - palm wine

Arak - palm liqour, which when mixed with 'madu' (honey) , water and lime has a vaguely 'margarita like' taste.

I got bored of drawing tonight and fiddled around with a BnA Cocktail menu based on the drinks you guys posted. The illustrations are by an awesome artist who's name I can't recall right now.

Might be slow to download...

Joey T already mentioned New Orleans' Hand Grenade, but I thought I'd bring it up again. Probably the strongest drink I've had! One does me good for a few hours.

Anyone else a regular Mardi Gras'er? I go to New Orleans every year for it...

I have to agree that the Norhtwest has some of the best mirco-brews I've ever had. I worked at Oregon Brewer Festival this year and fell in love with the beer I was serving, Woliver's Organic Belgian Wit. Now I'm on the East coast and can't find the darn stuff anywhere

You should still be able to find excellent Wit beers in New York City, even if you can't find Wolaver's. Try the Ginger Man, Blind Tiger Ale Bar or d.b.a.

Allagash White should be available somewhere in NYC, and I think its the best wit in the world today. Do try some authentic Belgian wits though to get an idea for the trans-atlantic flavor differences of the style. Hoegaarden is the classic, but there are lots of other choices.

rachelmh, if your looking to find oregon beers in nyc it's very possible!! i believe they even have a few on tap at dba (that's 2 endorsements!) in the east village, and i know for a fact there's an irish bar in the west village that sells a small variety of oregon beers by the bottle. during my last trip there i was shocked by the availability of oregon beers. very new thing though. good luck!

No one has included Jaegermeister... Terrible stuff, tastes like cough syrup, but actually IS a herbal digestive tonic.

Sky Annie: Jaegermeister is terrible. Even the only German I knew who liked it, had a night of 8 Jaegers and gave it up for good. And what about the Offspring song 'Spare Me The Details'?
'...my girlfriend, my dumb donut
went out to a party just the other night.
But 3 hours later, and 7 shots of jaeger,
she was in the bedroom with another guy.'

Delara: I originally put the thread in Europe Discussions because I was in Europe at the time... :-S Thanks for the shift.

Everyone: You guys with all those beers are making my mouth water. I even want to go out and find an import beer place today and buy a bottle of each.

I guess travellers are beer drinkers huh? Not much mention of wine in the thread :-)

Borderland, I never drink wine when I travel, since (at least in Canada) it's always far more expensive than beer.

Of course, we did buy a box of cheap red wine in rural New Brunswick once... whew that was a rough night, and morning... $30 for 4L... mmmm, slightly better than vinegar...

I think you'd be on the wine in Italy, in many bars here its around 4Euro for half a litre of beer & 4Euro for one litre of house red & I've not had a bad one yet...
