I am departing for my RTW trip in January with a basic itinerary as follows:

6 weeks in Barcelona TEFL Course (already paid for)
9 Months in South America (including 5 months teaching in Chile 0 although nothing arranged)
1 month NZ
2 Weeks Fiji (already paid for food and accommodation
1 Month Australia (staying with family for a couple of weeks)

My concern is that I only have £6k in the bank and and £2k Credit Card limit! I am hoping that worin in Chile I will break even so I at least don't spen any more money. Does this sound unrealistic?

If so, any tips for getting more money fast?

Also, any advice on an overdraft vs a credit card?

Ask people if they have any odd jobs that need done, or babysitting.

With TEFL paid for, Fiji paid for, and staying with people in Australia, you are probably good to go if you stick to your budget.

Maybe you could get a backup credit card, just in case?

I wish I could offer more advice, but I haven't yet gone one my RTW. Good luck!

yes, only use them in emergencies. make all the money you can between now and the trip b/c you dont want to go in debt over a trip, one day you have to return home. you'll already be depressed about that. so dont be depressed and broke.

there are lotsa threads on here on folks making extra money. i would be happy to put 100 pounds toward your trip. just jokin'. anyhow, check out those other threads. my favorite moneymaker:

It will be tight, unless you've also arranged for meals and funtime expenses in Barcelona. Don't count on saving much money while you teach. Somehow the money seems to dribble away as you work.

Still, I wouldn't worry.8k pounds britain is nearly 14k dollars, and you can do Europe as a tourist for about11000- 1500 euros a month.

Good luck!!!

Have you figured out what all the flights are going to add up to? If so, what's left after that? Maybe you could find a teaching job in SA in advance that paid your flight -- that would save you a lot. Are your dates fixed? If not, you might consider stopping off in Japan or Korea for a year and earning enough to keep going for a while. I left NYC in April 1996 with $3000 but no plan, and came back in May 2005 with $60K and an MA.
