I have a strange and new habbit of suplementing my travel income: collecting the deposite on beverage containers.

I know that there is a different system in practicaully every country or state.

I am planning a trip with Megabus.com from Milwaukee to Detroit which I am planning on paying for entirely with cans that I'm going to collect in Michigan--I don't think I can bring Wisconsin cans with me??(45 cans will pay for the trip!).

In Europe I collected bottels left by others on the street for returns of up to 0.25 EUR which adds up pretty quickly.

I found a wikipedia article describing several systems but I am wondering about other countires such as Austria and Croatia as well as more details on Canada's system.

Anyone else do this or something similar ever?

Interesting idea. I haven't done it myself but I'm pretty sure Kramer on Seinfeld did Smile

I can't be 100% certain with Croatia, but in Bosnia there was not much of a recycling program in place at all; People who bought beer (or whatever) in bottles that needed to be returned got a thorough talking-to at the time of purchase and were just told to bring them back. It would suprise me if Croatia had a much more extensive program (I haven't encountered much recycling here in Slovakia either)...Austria might though.

That was my observation in Bosnia and Slovakia as well. Though, in Croatia, I saw people collecting bottles from rubish bins on the street. In Austria I saw the return vending machines in stores but I wasn't there long enough to ask about the system.

How much do you get back for cans in MI?? And what price did you get for your bus ticket? I was curious how 45 cans could pay for a bus ticket, so I just checked out that route on Megabus.com and came up with a price of $18. That would mean you were getting 40cents for each can!! Here in MA we only get 5cents, maybe I need to move to MI Razz

MI has only 10 cents. Frown

But megabus.com works on a system allocating the first sold seats to cost $1 each way and then they go up depending on how many seats sold. Its very possible to get there for $4.50...
