Hello everyone
So I was curious to see what people had to say about how much money one would need to start out on an open ended trip and how long you could live off it. For starters lets say you are a budget traveler, staying in semi-descent hostels, camping and the such with the occasional hotel and night out.

Also, has anyone travled for long periods of time and worked as they traveled to stay on the road? How does that work out? Was it hard?

Thanks

It really depends on how long you plan to travel, where you plan to travel, and how you define "Budget traveler."

$3000 goes a much longer way in South America than it does in Europe for example. Providing some more specific info as to what your personal plans are would help people give you a better idea.

Also, there also seem to be threads already established about earning money on the road: such as the thread directly below yours. You should scope those out for info.

That is true. Our plans are pretty rough right now. I think we want to start in Europe, southern france staying in small towns and enjoying the coutryside and beaches. Other than that im not sure yet. I have heard SEA is cheap and full of beautiful culture. I am hoping to save $20,000 and go from there. I figure that should give us at least 9 or ten months of time to travel and figure where we want to go next.

I have looked into TEFL certificates and teaching english to earn money on the road, still researching and posting in these forums to see what people think. Have you been through South America? If so what was it like? thank you for your response

I have not been to South America, I'm currently planning a trip there and struggling to raise funds as well. SEA and South AMerica are both cheap places to travel, but again, it varies by how you travel and where you travel. Both are easy to travel and way cheaper than many other places. Teaching english is a good way to make money on the road. Another option is to volunteer on the road for someone or something that provides room and/or board. That way, you can see a place and save money at the same time. There are tons of opportunities for this in Europe as well. A lot of hostels also offer temporary jobs.
