I'm sure most of you are familiar with this situation. There is a place you always wanted to visit, and some airline runs a special promotion.

Bad luck, you didn't get the cheapest seat, but the next one up is just that bit more expensive--and you're hooked!

Then come the unplanned stop-overs. An internal flight, rather than a ferry ride. You haven't factored in the food costs (no, i'm not talking about Thai street food!). The hostel may be fully booked.

And so your budget inflates, one little puff at a time.

How long until it blows up in your face? When do you draw the line and decide not to go, this time?

I'm a heartbeat away from confirming a booking to Greenland. Getting there and around will cost one third more than I was hoping and there are many unplanned stopovers--Greenland is a country without express buses Wink

I could say 'yes' and just go. I may regret that.

My heart says go for it, my head is shaking 'no'. What to do?

Youch. 1/3 on airfare kills things quick. I'd say if your already having doubts about the trip's affordability before you leave, maybe it's best to save up and wait a while longer.

Once I'm on the road, I'm generally willing to spend more than budgetted if necessary, but I usually make it up elsewhere. For instance, we went overbudget in Turkey by about 1000 lira. But we're also about 3 weeks ahead of schedule, so it might just mean going home earlier.

Solution: I booked the tickets and bought a tent. Camping saves money. Now I only hope there isn't permafrost close to the surface so that I can pitch my tent...
