Holds PhD in Packing

I just thought that I would share my progress so far. I'm planning on leaving on my rtw trip next year around this time. My savings goal is $18-$20,000. So far I have $6500 in my RTW fund and I should hit $10,000 soon. I'm busting my butt at work and I live with my parents so I'm saving a minimum of $1000 a month. I've been selling a lot of my things on ebay and I'm taking on as much side work as possible. I have a background in carpentry so I have been building decks and sheds as well as doing some painting and roofing. I work 7 days a week most weeks, but it is all going to be worth it when I take off for a year or two and travel RTW. I cannot wait to get going.

Way to go dude! It sounds like you are right on track to make your goal. You are making some huge sacrifices, but I'm sure it will be totally worth it once you're out on the road.

I've found that keeping a progress chart on a sheet of graph paper is really motivating for me. Sounds kinda dumb, but I really like updating it every month and seeing that line creep upward!

I'm a bit of a dork and I have a massive excel spreadsheet that I visit daily, and not just because my countdown is kept there as well.

I have about 18k left to save and 7 months do do it in. It's gonna be a buys 7 months!

Every minute of work will be worth it

Good work! With just over a month to go, it looks like i may even beat my savings goal by a bit. Hopefully I won't blow through it all on beer in the first 3 months.

That's one thing I'm worried about as well. I love to try new beers and I hope that I can control myself!

Thanks for all of the replies, this trip has been about 3 years in the making. I started out with about $20,000 in debt that I had to pay off before I was even able to begin saving. Good luck to everyone on your goals and trips. I think that we, and all people who travel like we are planning too, are extraordinary as we have the ability and desire to work hard and sacrifice to make our goals happen. At this point I couldn't imagine becoming complacent and just settling into the holding pattern of spending and working that most people so easily fall into.
