My husband and I are almost ready to head out on our trip and just need to take care of the financial details like where do we put our money? Does anyone have recommendations for banks that cater to world travelers? We need a place to put our travel money, plus have easy on-line access and the ability to set up automatic payments for my student loan bills and our credit cards. Any advice is much appreciated thanks!

I've always done all that through my credit union so if you belong to one you might want to check it out. The main problem with most banks seems to be the fees they charge you for taking out money from ATMs (my credit union doesn't charge any fees) so that should probably be the first thing you ask your current bank about.

Thanks for your reply! We have two credit unions. One charges outrageous fees (like 3 dollars per transaction) and I forgot to check on the other. I'll do that! If you hear of any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

I'm currently living in Peru and had to switch from Bank of America (SF) to USAA because BoA was raping me on ATM fees, not to mention the currency conversion surcharge when using as a credit card.

Friends I've met here that didn't qualify for USAA (strict enrollment, check website) have had pretty good luck with netbank.

Good luck.

I'm crossposting a bit.....

My friend "kkny3" needs some advice on banking in Thailand, Vietnam & India. It seems, at least in Thailand, that HSBC will charge a lot off conversion, but is it normal or is she being screwed?

Here's the link to that discussion, so please post any advice there, it would be really helpful for her. She leaves in 3 weeks.

HSBC is really quite good, especially in Asia.

They are almost everywhere, at least in the big cities.
The coverage is definitely better than "Citibank" or other 'global wanna-be's.

Cheers,
Chris
