Inside the city itself, I found the Botanical Gardens and Boston Common quite lovely.

I can't remember exactly where, maybe near Somerville? I really used to enjoy running to, and in, The Fells when I was a student at MIT. Since I used to run there, I can't have been that far away.

While there are many excellent recommendations here in this thread, the weather this time of the year can be a killer. The Boston Common and Public Garden are cool to walk through any time of the year, statues, historic murals, frog pond etc. However right now it is all kind of brown, leafless and dreary. The Harbor Islands can be a delight and interesting but it is too early in the season for the ferry to be running to Georges Island.

Understanding then that the weather might not cooperate
1) Castle Island, get a hot dog, chowder and walk around the fort and watch the planes land at Logan Airport and the ships coming into Boston Harbor.

2) whalewatch, while I think it might be a cold and bumpy trip. It looks like they are starting up this weekend.
HarborExpress

3) take a ride on the blue Line out to Revere Beach and grab something at

but hopefully your friend will know how to use transit already
Sometimes we will get a brilliant spring day in April but lately it has been cold, wet and windy.
As for me, I am heading down to Washington DC in hopes of finding a little sunshine and the Cherry Blossoms.
Good luck.

Don't forget the Cape!

I believe there is a ferry that goes from Boston to Provincetown?

Also, there are several hostels on the Cape.

If you have a bicycle, Cape is ideal for it. Smile
