It is not a bohemian paradise by any stretch of the imagination. I doubt it's what you want to hear, but there's a lot of info in this thread.

I'm (or was) lukewarm about Isla (before the storm). But it's definitely not going to be the same since Wilma sat on it for 2 days.

I read a few reports that things are getting back in shape after Wilma. Regardless, things will still be different.

Isla Mujeras (Isle of the Woman?) was a decent place to visit for the day. There is a small town area and I think you can rent a golf cart for $35US a day. If you go to the other side of the island, there is a place you can snorkel, but you have to pay a fee.

Very commercialized.

Often Imitated.
Never Duplicated.

Actually Isla Mujeres is a great, relaxing, and better place to stay than Cancun. Talk about commericialism, Cancun is not much different than staying in the US.
Isla Mujeres gives you a better feel of Mexico.
If you want to snorkel, I recommend the pongas (skiffs).
You can find them along the beach across from the lighthouse. A typical snorkel trip is going all along the coast of the island, seeing the underwater statue, a nice lunch provided and all. Last year it was about $10 US per person. They even include the gear.
We enjoyed it so much. We didnt care for Cancun.
Also, take the walk around the cliffs at the south end of the island.
There are quite a few hotels and hostels.
Enjoy!

It`s really hard to get away from commercialization on this part of Mexico`s Caribbean coast. If you`re looking for something bohemian, Tulum would be a better bet than Isla Mujeres. Tulum is by bus two hours south of Cancún´s airport, and has the best beaches in this part of Mexico.
