I am looking into getting my diving license and wondering if anyone knows of any good schools in the LA area. Much appreciated.

You can learn to dive in any hotel in Mexico. If you like what you've been doing, you can take a course with the person who's been teaching you the basics in the pool. They often take you to a coral reef first and then you can decide whether to take it further or not.

Yeah, I want to get certified but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it (hence Mexico). Thanks for the info.

Cheers,

My boyfriend got certified as a diver in Mexico last year (Puerto Vallarta to be exact) and it still cost him a pretty penny. I think he paid around $200 at one of the hotels. They really take advantage of the tourists' wallets. Plus, the whole process takes time out of your vacation. Between the learning in the pool, classroom instruction, and actual dives, it took 3 days. And, he had to study for the tests while we were all out having a good time. Hope that give you a little perspective on the alternative. I have no idea what it costs here is the US. Good Luck!!!

Hola delara,

You could try contacting one of the following Spanish schools:
Cancún:
Bosque del Caribe
Cancún Spanish Language Institute (CSLI)
Playa del Carmen:
Playalingua
Solexico Playa del Carmen

I recently visited the area doing research for a book and found that some of the Spanish-language schools also offered dive instruction. By the way, if you are going to learn to dive in Mexico, I highly recommend that you go to the Caribbean Coast (where these schools are located). The water is clearer and warmer than on the Pacific Coast.

Buena suerte!

If Catalina Island is close enough, it's supposed to be a good place to dive. My instructor in Colombia spent 2 years working at a dive-center on Catalina, but I don't know the name of the company... She is ultra-professional, and I wouldn't hesitate diving with the outfit who trained her!
