I just gotta toot my (State's) own horn. The Great North State has it all: outer banks (picture your own little uninhabited island beach = Masonboro Island), beach towns (no neon, just cottages = Wrightsville Beach), big cities (museums, theater, art, nightlife= Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, Asheville), Adventure (drive NASCAR=Charlotte, Rockingham/ rock climbing = Looking Glass Rock near Brevard / mountain climbing=Mount Mitchell=6,684’=highest peak on east coast, Grandfather mtn, Table Rock, Appalachian Trail/ paddling= Nolichucky, Hiawassee, Nantahala, Green, South fork of the New). I can go on and on. Drop me a line and I’ll tell you my secret places; one on one only, they wouldn’t be secret if I just posted them. North Carolina even has snow skiing! Don’t get too excited though, our slopes are a little harder than you’ve experienced elsewhere. Fun though!
Fall is arriving and our mountain's fall colors are incredible! Absolutely Incredible!! I suggest seeing them from one of my secret camp sites deep down in a pristine valley, looking North towards Grandfather Mountain. Waterfalls nearby. COLD creeks. Quite. No “city” noise. You can’t even hear a car if you listen real hard. Peace!

Thanks JuneBug. I'm certain World travelers dont think, "I know, we'll go to North Carolina!" But it is truly a world-class destination....especially with a little local knowledge.

We have had such a hot summer in FL this year I have been considering moving to NC and checking out all the cities. My dad was in the Marine Corp and stationed at Camp LeJune and they talked so much about how they loved it there I was checking out that area around Jacksonville. What do you think of that area. I understand has really grown alot as all places have but am considering checking it out this fall on a road trip. Like you said it has it all. She said they never had to use AC and never snows in Eastern NC.

I know Jacksonville, NC very well. If you're trying to escape the heat, that'd be the wrong place to go! Coastal, humid! Lots of Floridians like the Cahiers / Highlands area. I'd suggest looking at Lake Toxaway or upper South Carolina (lake Joccassee!).

Its really a beautiful state, and great place to live. Such chill people, and Ive never met so many nice people as i did in NC. I dont think I encountered one rude person there. I lived in Salisbury, which is right in the middle of Winston Salem, Greensboro, and Charlotte! However, I wouldve like to be a little closer to Charlotte, was about 45 min drive.
Visited Asheville. Only thing I regret was not being to see the outer banks, especially since I lived there during the summer. Fav hang out? Noda district!

Im totally thinking of heading to North Carolina this summer for 8 weeks with my friend. We are both 25 and from England. Just wanted some advice on best place to stay??? we like lively cities but also want to rent a house somewhere, in particular a one with a porch, for the 6 weeks!!
Any recommendations on accommodation, things to do, etc.
Greatly appreciated. Ali

There are some great rentals around the United Methodist Retreat in Junaluska, which was just beautiful last time I checked. Lots of country stuff to do like hiking and canoeing, and at a high enough altitude to be relatively cool even in summer.

I live in South Florida and I must say that I have been, for the better part of 3 years, contemplating moving to the Carolinas. I would prefer North Carolina over South Carolina really only because (and yes, sadly I am sterotyping)I have met a few people from SC and they are just a little....out there. =)

Well put, brother! As a fellow Tar Heel (from Sanford) that's a long way from home I have to say thank you for bringing memories to mind. I'm ready to go back for a visit now. Would you share that special place of which you speak?
You nearly brought a tear to my eye! BCD

It's definitely one of the most beautiful, and fortunately underrated parts of the US...and maybe that's a good thing. As long as tourists, travellers, backpackers, etc. keeping missing it as a stop on thier USA roadtrips, then it might retain all that's great about it even longer.
