Hello folks,

Just saw a news flash about the number of murders in Tijuana this year (something like 1300!!!), and I'm getting a little concerned. I'm planning to visit Friday night, but after hearing all the shit going on down there, not sure if it's the best thing to do.

If it makes any difference, I'll be visiting with natives that visit on a regular basis.

What say you?

From what I know, most of the murders in the north of Mexico, including Tijuana, are mostly drug cartel-related. Having been in some of the other hotspots personally (Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo) I would say that if you are NOT with locals, you'd probably be safer. Tourists really aren't a target in the big battles. But you could still get in the crossfire. And let's face it - Tijuana has never made the "safest cities of the world" list. My guess is that it probably isn't any more dangerous than usual. Have a tequila for me!

I have to agree with the above poster-Tijuana is never "safe" but most the real violence is amoung gang/drug members-not saying that tourists can't get caught in the crossfire. However, if you go with friends, don't get drunk or attempt to buy drugs and stay out of dark deserted areas you should be fine.
