Is BC and Alberta still warm enough in September and early October?
I've had to delay my trip by a few weeks so will be hitting BC at these times.

I'm going to BC in early September. It will be warm enough in Desolation Sound at least but the water does begin to cool down. I go every year usually in August or July. In September there will be less people and warm days are less guaranteed.

A couple years ago, I spent some time on Vancouver Island at Port Alberni and Tofino, which were the highlights of that trip. There is a ship called the Lady Rose that goes between Port Alberni and Bamfield and Port Alberni and Ucluelet (though the latter trip only goes into mid September as I recall): Lady Rose Website

Tofino has some great hiking and a lot of activities such as whale watching that go on through September.

You take the Skeena VIA rail route from Jasper (I believe) to Prince Rupert, and a BC Ferries boat from there. I haven't done the trip myself, but would love to some day. Click on How to Get There for transport info.

hello everyone,
Yes, BC can be fantastic in the fall-----Alberta often gets a nasty storm around the first week of September. Then it will go back to being warm and sunny in daytime, cooler and maybe some frost at night.

If you plan to be closer to Vancouver for part of the time, check this out: whistler accommodations It is very nice in Vancouver area at that time of year, fewer crowds-----lots of great restaurants too!

Alberta can be iffy around September and October. Some years it could be quite nice (+15 to 20) but some years it can already be snowing and nasty. As the saying goes in Edmonton, "if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes and it will change".
BC should still be comfortable though.

i just got back from the tofino/ucluelet area. i had to wear a long sleeve and windbreaker on the beach to be comfortable. the west coast of vancouver island is consistently 10-15 degrees cooler than the east coast (nanaimo, victoria). port alberni is a good place to stock up on food by the way (tofino is expensive).

Warm is a relative term i suppose. I live in Vancouver, and it's sunny ussually from mid june to mid sept.. and then it gets a little wet.

It's rarely cold though, hovering around 10C for most of the year. Depending on the year the sun sometimes doesn't go away until october... but then again we've had snow as early as oct 1st too (very rare).

You won't be too cold... bring a rain jacket in case... and the crowds will have definately died down. As for Vancouver Island... it's almost going to be wet there the entire year regardless of when you go Smile

Weather is very unpredictable around here any time of year.
I've seen harvests go on into October, and I've seen them ruined by snow in early September. Hell, I've seen a snow dump in August. Wink (yes, in the middle of the prairies)

I think September could be a lovely time to be here - not too hot, not usually too cold. the leaves are changing colour, there is some crispness in the air (I love the autumn crispness)... I would say that by end of October, there's a 50-50 chance that there is some snow on the ground that will stay until spring. But even at that, the harsh cold doesn't USUALLY come around until mid-winter. Even if there is snow in October in Alberta, the temps don't often get below -10 or so. But I guess it depends on how hardy you are whether that's a scary thought.

I can't comment too much on the weather in BC, because I don't really know. We will, however, be on Vancouver Island for the first week of Sept, so I'm hoping the weather will be decent. Wink
