The Vaccine Testing Unit (VTU) at John Hopkins University School of Public Health conducts clinical trials on several vaccine candidates.

One of their current studies is an oral vaccine, taken before travel, to protect against infection from a bacterium called enterotoxigenic E. coli. This organism is a leading cause of diarrhea in travelers
and children in the developing world.

The vaccine is being tested in US and Canadian residents traveling to attend language schools in Cuernavaca, Mexico and Antigua, Guatemala, areas where the incidence of travelers’ diarrhea is very high.

Students in these 2 and 3-week immersion programs are ideal study candidates because the VTU has facilities in or near the major language schools. This makes it convenient for the study participants to provide the required specimen samples while in the country.

Study volunteers are compensated up to US$600 for their complete participation. This scholarship can be used to cover most or all of the cost of attending the language program.
