Hi, first time to this forum. I am leaving Britain in September to go travelling for 8 months. My first destination is New York where I an planning to stay up to a week. Can anyone adive me on any hostels? I am travelling on my own so am looking for somewhere in a safe area. I will probably be looking for a single room on the first night, followed by Dorms - and cheap. Thanks in advance, Rach

I don't know about hostels...but if you need a good room for one night check out http://www.bedandcoffee.com/. This place rocks. For a single room it might run you about $100. It's easy to get to and very safe. Just my 2 cents

Hi, Rachel, and welcome to the boards!

Here is a link to the search page here at BootsnAll for hostels in New York. Just plug in the appropriate info about when you're arriving and leaving and there you go!

If you need anything else, give us a holler. Smile

Ciao,
Jessie

The Chelsea Star is a nice hostel, very central (right next to Penn Station), but a little pricey.

The HI hostel is a little out of the action (106th St.) but cheaper and with more space.

DON'T stay at Jazz on the Town. It's noisy and incredibly crowded.

hi, i travelled from england a couple of months ago and spent a week at the malibu hostel, in manhattan erm broadway n 103rd i think. it was $20 a night or there abouts, 8 bed dorms (might be a bit more expensive now with the holidays etc). seemed fairly safe to me (people around at 2-3am) and the subway was just across the street.

if youre staying for a week and using public transport then i'd recommend a 7 day subway pass($25 i think) - got me anywhere and everywhere i wanted to go.

i normaly check for hostels at hostelbookers.com

good luck with your travels.

Hi There

I would recommend the HI Hostel just off Amsterdam Avenue, fairly central and easy to get to with lots of shops just there for you to get something to eat.

The Subway is fairly easy to use but I wouldn't venture on there late at night without friends.

Also, the Hostel has lots of tours that you can go on...the best two that I did were the walking tour of Central Park (free if I remember rightly) and the tour to the Harlem Appollo Theatre for Amateur Night (a fabulous night out and fun too!!)

I second that! I am actually typing this from the computer room at the New York HI Hostel. Lots of room and additional activities included. Tonight was "Stand up Comedian" night. Last night was movie night. It came very highly recommended. If you want to stay here its never too early to make your reservations because its booked sold right now. I hope some of this helps with your decision.

Uh, just FYI... Montreal, Toronto, and Buffalo aren't exactly "around the area" of NYC. Just don't want you to be surprised by the unexpected...

Hi, I stayed at the Chelsea Star hotel a few years ago. While I thought it was in a good location I woudn't say it's the best hostel for meeting people since it doens't really have a common area. It does have a small patio but that's it. This being said this was a few years ago so maybe they added something so I would check. For a private room in a hostel I would book in advance as soon as possible since most hostels have limited private rooms. I would also call any hostel you are thinking of staying in and see if they have air conditioning especially if you are travelling in the beginning of September.
