It's early in the planning stages, but I'm organizing a walk as part of NYC's Bike Month. It's going to be a 18 to 20-mile trek, starting and finishing at the Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens.

We'll be passing through four boroughs -- Queens, the Bronx, Manahattan, and Brooklyn.

It's scheduled for 9 AM on May 18th. There will more details to follow, on the walk and Bike Month in general.

Maybe this could tie in to some sort of meet-up?

I can walk and I can drink beer. My question is will I have to climb over barb wire fences and dodge Amtrak trains to complete the trek?

No fences this trip -- the whole way is legit.

The basic route is start in Astoria, Triboro Bridge to the Bronx, Willis Ave Bridge to Harlem, down the east side to the Lower East Side and the Williamsburg Bridge, through Brooklyn to the Pulaski Bridge, back to Queens, along the East River, then into the beer garden, which will be open, inshallah.

If we were allowed to walk over the Verrazano Bridge, it would have been included.

We could, but then it would be a walking/sailing tour.

I also want to start and finish at the same place, on the same day. I also want to start and finish in Queens as I'm doing this as a member of Transportation Alternatives' Queens Committee.

I do like the idea of a 5-borough walk, though -- maybe starting in the Bronx and ending in Staten Island -- why don't you organize one?

While that 5-borough walk is not a bad idea, I was just foolin' around about Staten Island...

I've managed, kind of, to map the route out if anyone's interested.

You know what'd be REALLY cool?

If you made it into a biathlon and SWAM to Staten Island!

Doesn't a traditional biathlon involve shooting? It's too bad New York has gotten so safe in recent years...

I just wanted to bump this up to the top of the forum as the date's getting nearer.

Here's the listing for it. I don't think the contact link works, though, so you can PM me with questions or asks them on this thread.

The walk's on for this Sunday -- let me know if you're interested.

If you don't want to do the whole 20 miles but want to join at some point along the route, PM with your cell number and where you want to meet us and I'll call you when we get close.
