Hi there,

I'm planning to spend a month or so at a Spanish immersion school in Mexico and am looking for suggestions. I'm in my early 30s and would ideally like to end up some place that attracts students in their 20s and 30s. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Hi kbell212,

Welcome. There are quite a few threads on Spanish language schools in Mexico. I'll try to link to a search I just did here.

Other than that, the schools in Mexico tend to be quite a bit more expensive than, say, those in Guatemala. If I were you, I'd decide what city you want to be in, then shop for a school there.

And you could do a lot worse than Guanajuato... Smile

¡Suerte!

Guanajuato is a very popular place to study Spanish, and gorgeous too. I'd also suggest Cuernavaca, San Cristobal de las Casas, and Oaxaca City for language study - all are popular with the crowd you're looking for.

Probably the most popular place to study Spanish in the region though (almost too popular to be able to ever speak Spanish outside your lessons), is Antigua, Guatemala.

I spent five weeks at a school in Guanajuato earlier this year called Academia Falcon. Very inexpensive compared to other schools in town (like Don Quixote) and the lessons were very good. But there weren't many people in their 20s and 30s. I think that's true of most language schools....the people who tend to have time to take off and go to a language school are college students and retired people. Also Guanajuato's a great town for a week or two but after that it's a bit dull. Oaxaca had a lot more going on.

I loved Guanajuato as a city, and I can't see you going wrong picking that place. There IS free mexican music every night for the cost of a cup of coffee or perhaps a meal.

Oaxaca has more to offer in the big city department, and its less touristy by a tad, not to mention the pyramids nearby, AND the beach available on weekends.

Cuernevaca was cute, but I didn't like it as a whole. Too overrun by young students.

San Cristobal would also get my vote. It has an interesting Indian feel to it, the people can be nice, and its a civilised place.

Then there is Guatemala, which certainly is cheaper for the value you get.

Someone said there were schools by the pacific side as well. Don't know a lot about them.
