are there redwoods in middle to s California?
SF downwards to LA.

I know there's the main park up in Northern California but might not have time to go there...

Yep, Muir Woods, just north of SF:

There's also Redwood Regional Park in Oakland but the redwoods there aren't old growth.

You could also try Sequoia National Park down east of Fresno/Visalia

Muir Woods is about 1/2 hour from San Francisco; this is largely because of the twisty road to get there.

I believe Big Sur, which is around Monterey, has redwoods. I've not been there so I can't speak of their majesty. I can tell you Muir Woods, or even along the Russian River (1.5 hours from SF) have stunning redwoods and are both very close to SF.

Probably the closest to Southern Ca. would be Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park outside of Visalia- Redwoods are Sequoias.

big sur, just south of monterey has redwoods - try andrew moleras campground or pfieffer big sur. might have to make reservations at pfieffer, but i think andrew molera is first come, first serve. plus there are private campgrounds around there too.

There are redwoods all the way down to southern Big Sur.

There are the redwoods at Big Basin, the entrance is just south of Ano Nuevo and north of Santa Cruz. (Where the wind surfers surf).

Butano State Park has redwoods and some amazing hiking trails.

Highway 9 coming down the mountain from Skyline Dr and into Santa Cruz is full of redwoods.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park has 'em.

There are redwoods in Big Sur and at Pfeiffer Big Sur campgrounds you can choose a spot under the redwoods or under the oaks.

The farthest south stand of them that I've been through are the ones at Limekiln State Park.

These patches of coastal redwood are not old growth, but they are still large and still redwood trees.

Muir Woods is just north of SF (Mill Valley exit) and even though you don't *really* need a car to get there, you can do a tour, but I don't think the tours give people enough time to hike around. The tour people always seem to be rushing around.
