Was planning to be in Canada during August and September, go to Toronto for a few days then spend 3/4 weeks in British Columbia and Alberta. I hear accommodation is very busy at this time of year - is that true?
Will it be easy enough to get into backpacker type places along the way (Vancouver, Victoria, Telegraph Cove, Queen Charlotte, Prince Rupert, Jasper, Banff, Glacier, Okanagan, etc.)?
Do you suggest just booking something for the first night in advance and then winging it after that booking 1 day in advance at all times?

August is ridiculous - one of the busiest vacation months of the year! But you'll have great weather. Once the kids go back to school in September (after the Labour Day long weekend), you'll find it will get mucher easier to find accomodation and you'll get to enjoy Canada's beautiful landmarks on your own. September is a fabulous month to spend in the Rockies! Enjoy!

Hey there...I am from vancouver. I think you can find something once you land here....But maybe take a reservation one day and then use that day to hunt around....There are LOTS of places to stay in Van....Toronto is even bigger and I bet the same can be said of there. Look in the outlying areas...The subway is terrific in TO and the Skytrain is good in Van

hey yeah hostels are likely to be getting fuller by the second for august - i work in one in niagara falls and we are already filling up with reservations. Its true that you can still walk in and check in but it doesnt hurt to book a few online as long as the hostel gets 24 hours notice or even first thing in the morning for that night its easy just to change dates.

There are several hostels in the bigger cities but some are better than others - check out www.hihostels.ca as the hostelling international hostels here in canada are awesome and totally recommmended and without a doubt some of the best hostels i have stayed in. Also if you book on that website you wont be charged any deposits.

Also i would suggest getting an HI membership as you also save 25% with greyhound along with numerous other discounts - having one definately made a difference in savings for me.
