I am planning a trip across the US by bike beginning in July, which will be a change from my usual backpacking adventures. I decided to go a different way due not only to the weak $, but it's been quite a while since I've seen much of the US. Has any BA. member done or is planning such a trip?

I have not done any bicycle touring, but I talk to plenty of people who do.
First thing to know: You are not the first guy with this idea. There are plenty of books, maps, and routes for long distance bicycle touring. There is no need to re-invent the wheel. These routes will take you "off the beaten path" and away from heavy car traffic, but still close enough to civilization to have access to services.
Go to several local, independent bike shops and ask about routes, maps etc. Do NOT go to REI to ask about bike touring. Those guys are good with gear, but they don't know routes, etc.
Then, AFTER you figure out where you're going, and how long it will take, THEN, you can work on your gear list.
Good luck! Sounds like a blast!

Well, First of all, I already have my route planned and I've managed to secure my gear. I never intended to reinvent the wheel, as you say. I was only interested in touching base to see if any BNA members had done this, simply to exchange info. I am aware that many others have done this already. Also, I don't know about your experiences, but here in NORCAL, the folks at REI are very involved in not only equipment, but also are usually involved in the use of it. It's always a little unfair to paint with a broad brush. That said, thanks for your response and input. Timmie

Have a great time- you should meet lots of others doing the same thing. You might want to google bike clubs in different areas and see if they have a website or contact #s with the idea of getting some local perspective. I know that our club in No. Cal is always open to including travelers in our events.
