Can anyone tell me what I can expect with a nine day visit to Tower Michigan? I am suppezed to be taking an old friend to visit the grave stone of her childhood dog. From the pictures i have seen, he is a beautiful shelty-oh, the coat on him was like chrome! The dog proved rabid after being bit by a squirrel that always used to come up to the patio for scraps. Suppose Chet, which was the dog's name, got a bad foam and had to be shot. The furthest north I have ever been is saginaw-went there to visit the school and eat lunch at the old press shop with a skipper. NEVER eat lunch in a print shop. I expect this mole that i have was due to me leaving my sandwhich near the printing press portion of the little place.

Never been to Tower.... but as it looks like a tiny up-north hick town, that's inland, so I'd say don't expect much. What time of year are you going? If it'll be warm enough, head towards the water. If you like hiking, Mackinaw St. Forest is right there. Or, could try heading to Mackinaw City, or the Island, or up to the U.P. Otherwise... find a bar and drink. That's all anybody else does up there, anyway.

No. I quit drinking-Gets me into trouble. I once drank a beers and entered a Toys R Us and tried to steal a bike.
I will pretty much be in Tower the whole time unless I hitchhike. Because me and friend are taking a bus. The time of year that I am going will be early April. I do want to be there for my friend as she grieves. I do like to hike-I hike real far and dig for things. I once found a few fossils. I sold them. Not for much, but $ is $. Sorry. English is not my first language and I think in pictures. |

Well, if you don't drink and with no ride, I'd say your best bet is to hang out in the state forest and find things to do there.

ha ha, sorry, I just don't think I've ever seen anyone mention "Saginaw" before on bna.
Do you have to hang out in Tower the whole 9 days? I grew up one town over from Saginaw but never really went north (except mackinac island of course). I just wanted to comment on this thread..... |

It is okay if I go in forest. But not at night. Then you can't see the animal's teeth. And they shut their eyes so the eyes will not glow. And they might run into you and give you rabies like Chet had. I hear flash lights attract bears and muskrats but don't know. Does anyone know?
I have to stay in Tower the whole time. Pretty much unless I get lucky. I don't like to bum from people because then they expect you to be in debt to them (sometimes do not want to risk) |

hi my mother's family's from northern Michigan. It's very remote up there and .......remote. But it's nice to know other people actually go there!
Other than that, sorry, I don't really understand your post. |

Everybody goes there, but nobody lives there. Anytime anybody in Michigan is going somewhere for a weekend or holiday, it's "up-north". Lots and lots of people have cabins that they go up to, but nobody wants to actually stay there all the time, because, well... it's remote... As for bears... there are some black bears up there. Most are in the upper peninsula, but there's about 1400 scattered around the lower peninsula. They won't approach you unless you have food they want, and even then they're pretty unlikely to attack, even if you provoke them. If you stay overnight in the forest, tie up everything in a tree. Take only what you absolutely need into the tent, tie up everything else. It's really not likely that you'll even see a bear, but if you do, you just gotta be smart. Stay still until it goes away, and if it starts getting too close to you, try to scare it away. Also, just FYI, you're not allowed to carry a rifle "for protection". The DNR assumes if you have a rifle, you're hunting. I'm not totally sure about if you have a registered handgun on you... but since bears are protected by law, I'm pretty sure they won't let you shoot one with a .45, either. Though, firing off some rounds might scare it away, but the DNR still might not be happy about that.. but I'd rather deal with them than a bear attack.... Not that you asked about any of that, but I did at one point, so just sharing the knowledge. But the point of the matter is, bears really aren't a problem. __________________________________________________________________________________ If women had any idea, even for a second, of how we really looked at them, they would never stop slapping us. For many generations my mother's side of the family had a small summer house in Roscommon.....which is kind of a teeny tiny dot on the map. Actually, there are houses everywhere, but I always felt out of touch with everything because I'm from the city. I also had family in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. I just didn't meet many people outside my immediate family there.
