i am considering going to toronto for a few days. and i was wondering if anyone could tell me how easy it is to have a day trip to niagra falls, i know its close by, by either bus or train.
Niagara Falls is a great day trip and you can catch a tour at most major hotels if you don't have a rental car. Check www.niagaratours.cafor a great deal - $79CAD which includes a ride on the Maid of the Mist (I know it's cheezy but you can't go to the Falls and not ride under them).
If a tour package isn't your thing and you have access to a vehicle, it's an easy 1.5 hr drive which leaves lots of time to check out the Falls. The town of Niagara Falls is a huge tourist trap but the Falls are worth the visit.
If you have time, I highly recommend visiting some of the vineyards in the Niagara region and check out our Ontario wines (Ice wine being the specialty of the region). Chateau des Charmes is especially nice.
Second just about everything there. The town itself is nothing much - the main drag is hilariously awful. Maid of the Mist may be cheesy but is very much worth it - it's some experience. If, like me, you wear glasses, take them off beforehand if you want to see anything :-)
And although it will be crowded, try to take the time to get up close to the edge for a while at the point where the falls, erm, fall - it's beautiful and mesmerising. I could have stared at that all day. The noise, the power - sheer unstoppable grace.
And yes to the vineyards - if you can, take an afternoon/extra day to do a cycle tour around several of them. It's nice countryside and the wines are good - try the organic wines at FrogPond Farm - they do a good tour as well, and the people that own and run it are lovely. I can also recommend the ice wine - I still have a bottle on my rack waiting for my Dad's 70th birthday in a few months' time. Enjoy!
