Knows What a Schengen Visa Is
Posted
So...I have the flight from hell coming up. Oaxaca to Mexico City to Cancun to Miami to Washington, DC. Two questions:

1) Where will I clear customs? In Miami or in DC?

2) Will my bags go all the way through from Oaxaca to DC or will I need to retreive them in Miami and recheck them?

Thanks!

Ed

  • You will clear Customs in Miami. May God have mercy on your soul.

  • You will need to claim your bags in MIA (in case the schmoes want to paw through it),
and then recheck them (easy) to your final destination.

Thanks! So I have 2 1/2 hours in Miami. Is that sufficient time for clearing customs, getting my suitcase, rechecking it, and getting to my next plane? And will I need to go through security again?

Yes, and hopefully. The "hopefully" stems from the possibility that your connecting flight may be parked at another terminal.

If you are connecting on the same airline, I wouldn't worry at all.

You'll clear customs and immigration at MIA (aptly named), and also have to claim and re-check your bags there. Flying into the States from abroad is so much fun these days. You should also keep in mind that Mexican airports usually are more liberal with the liquid carry-ons than US airports. For example, any duty-free liquor you buy there will need to be carry-on, but you'll have to check it in your bags in Miami.

And that is why I fly TACA to Colombia: no routing through MIA.

Almost all of my flights from MSP to Latin America are through Houston, which isn't so bad.
