Cody, we looked into that once and decided to skip it, but we had smaller children at that time. It seems like I remember that it was going to be at least an 8 hour bus ride and a cliff hanger at that. It's not recommended to do these bus rides at night either because of danger of being robbed, and you'd have a fit if you could see the route it's so steep. My husband and I had a huge fight about that--he wanted to go to P.E. so bad, and he about won, but then even he decided that it just wasn't going to work. It's one of those things where if you're going to be in P.E. for at least a week it might be worth it, but if your trip is short, you probably don't want to take a whole day out to travel.

We looked into flights, but for 4 of us that wasn't feasible. For you it might be the best option. If memory serves, the flight was about $200 RT.

Oops Cody, I just reread-- add another 3 hours from M.C. to P.E. I was thinking of Oaxaca, which is cool, BTW. That's another option if you have the time--break it up and stay some places on the way.

Bus service in Mexico is excellent....it's so good, reliable, CONSTANT, and trouble-free I'm not going to waste my fingertips.

MC-Oaxaca.....pick your class of service...heck, you can even catch a Oaxaca bus from the M.C. airport depending upon what time you arrive...

Oaxaca-P.E.....pick your class of service...etc., etc....

Really, no worries.

¡Buen Viaje!

I took the bus from M.C. to Oaxaca and the ride was about 6 hours- a pleasant ride and there are multiple coach classes to choose from. The one I took in August was maybe 390 pesos one way?

Buses in Mexico are so comfortable and cheap and just plain AWESOME compared to US services like Greyhound, don't even think about risking hitchhiking... take the bus!

I totally agree that the bus service is wonderful, and there were movies and everything. And if you look at a map, the distance is not that far from Oaxaca to P.E. But it is a world away all the same, because the route is extremely mountainous, which is why we decided to skip it. I'm thinking it was supposed to be an 8 hour bus ride from Oaxaca to PE, and even further from MC.

There are four big bus terminals in MC, basically north, south, east and west. I think a couple of the terminals have Oaxaca busses, but I'm pretty sure the one with the most departures is TAPO (a.k.a. terminal Oriente, the east terminal). Paying extra for deluxe class service is worth it, in my opinion, if you can afford it.

P.S./Edit: Missed this. Yes, as go girl says, the bus ride from Oaxaca to PE is through the mountains. So if you have a problem with that, you might want to avoid it. But those drivers are pros, and could probably do it blindfolded.
