Hi all,

I am a couple months from returning to the US from my SE Asia trip. I was looking to make some money over the summer and someone on the bus recommended Alaska. Anyone have any adivice on this? Is it really that easy to hook-up a job there (this person recommended Ketchikan because there are so many tourists in the summer). Thanks.

I was thinking of Ketchikan as well. I'm looking to work in one of the jewelry shops. Does anyone have any info about working at Salmon Falls Resort.

I'm sorry I don't have specifics for either of you but unless you've got a nest egg, I wouldn't recommend going up there unless you have a job. Cost of living is high. Generally the jobs people go to Alaska for are things that you work hard at, for many hours. You make money because you don't have any time to spend it. Be prepared for this.

When considering a resort job I would ask questions about food and board. You may end up needing to spend a pretty penny just to get there and then you'll have to consider all your cost of living expenses.

AK is a beautiful place and the summers are magical. Have fun!

I've been hired by a jewelry company in Ketchikan. They pay for the round trip flight as well as my accomodations. It's not like Im going up there to work on a fishing boat or anything of the sort.

As far as cost of living Im not concerned about that. I live in Waikiki, Hawaii I don't think it could be any worse.

I've already worked in Skagway for 2 summers and Juneau for 1. Groceries were very expensive in Skagway and a little cheaper in Juneau. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on Ketchikan.
