Puerto Vallarta is a good getaway, if you know what to expect before going. It's very gringo-fied, and rather expensive for Mexico. There are some excellent accommodations - you should buy these as a package before you go, if you're interested. There's an interesting range of eating options, and the nightlife (especially gay) can be a lot of fun.
If that doesn't do it for you, it's also a good gateway to quieter beaches in Nayarit or Jalisco states.
The canopy tours/zip line experiences are a little pricey (in terms of Mexico) at $70 - $80, but worth the money in my opinion. If you haven't done that before, it's quite exhilarating, perfectly safe and a good way to see the forest, though the whole thing only lasts half a day.

Hello, I have been to Puerto Vallarta on various occasions. It is a great place to visit because it has all sorts of activities you can do at any time of the day, plus it's a really safe town. You can visit nearby beaches, shop in town, check out art galleries, do water sports, eat at fantastic restaurants, take boat rides, etc. Then at night just have a blast at the various bars and restaurants that offer a great nightlife. The weather is usually great throughtout the year and always sunny. I'm a big fan of this city and reccomend it very much. Lately I have been staying at a really nice resort that is very close to the downtown area. Here's a link so you can check it out and a bit about the Puero Vallarta. www.greatplacesmexico.org or also www.mexicosunplaces.com I love this city and am sure you'll have a great trip.

Hello, while you won't be able to watch turtles nesting on the beach in apr/may, you might find something else of interest on my lil' page on Puerto Vallarta, especially if you like street food.

I live just north of Puerto Vallarta and highly recommend renting a car or taking the bus for a day or two up the coast to the north. There are lots of great towns like Bucerias, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Punta Mita, Sayulita and more.
Our experience at the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta was like something out of a fairy tale. The property was gorgeous, well maintained and the staff fantastic. We highly recommend this property to anyone. No resort could possibly be compared to the Grand Mayan Resorts. And the best thing is, as a member you can travel throughout the beaches of Mexico and stay at this wonderful chain of resorts. If you have the chance to check them out, they are great. Here are some links to help out. Good luck on your trip! www.whoisbestresort.info , www.greatplaces.org
