Hey Rafo,

I just spent two months living in Oaxaca. Definitely lots going on, much more than other mid-sized Mexican cities that I visited. Lots of music and dance events, plus some theatre. If you walk around town, you'll see plenty of posters for various events. The Oaxaca Lending Library can be a good source of information as well. Or just head down to the zocalo, there's normally something going on.

As for accomodations, how long will you be there? There's a place on Crespo that rents rooms by the month, with or without a kitchen. Price was about $300 a month. If you're interested, I'll try to remember exactly where it is.

Enjoy!

Everything that I'm going to list is probably a no-brainer....but here it is anyhow:

Monte Alban

visit lots and lots of Mezcal shops for free samples Wine

Chapulines! (they're quite tasty)

in Puerto Escondido:
check out the surf break, especially at Zicatela - equally spectacular for surfers and viewers.

Surf if you know how, Take a lesson if you don't.

There is a little restaurant/cafe very near the main surf break ack...can't remember the name Crazy best mole negro EVAR! point is mole negro is something you should experience somewhere in Oaxaca.

Anyhow, I loved it there...have a great time!

Hey Ed, Even if Rafo isn't staying for that long, I'll be there for at least two months starting in July and I'm interested in renting a decent room so I'd appreciate the info. Thanks!

thanks. ive been researching on the net and found some of the listed items too.
such as

Laguna de Manialtepec
Nature Preserves, Puerto Escondido

Parque Nacional Laguna Chacahua
National Park)). You can tour the lagoon in a small motor launch, watching the birds that hunt among the mangroves. The bird population is biggest during the winter months, when migratory species arrive from the frozen north. Most tours from Puerto Escondido include a visit to a crocodile farm and an hour or two on the beach at Cerro Hermoso.

Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga
Address: Playa Mazunte, Zipolite, Oaxaca

once ive been and done ill post some ideas here if i discover anything interesting.
thanks for the help

My uncle has a B&B just outside of Oaxaca but I think his apartment is already rented for July (it's really nice and fairly inexpensive). Still, if you go to his website, he has a listing of site and things to do around the city of Oaxaca: http://www.casaadobe-bandb.com/

My favorite things to do around Oaxaca
Archaeology: Monte Alban, Yagul, Mitla, and Dainzu
Santa Domingo-- a church and museum.
Sit at the Blue Table ( a restaurant on the zocolo), drink beer and watch the tourists
Drink Rum pope (creamed rum). You can find the nuns selling it. It's probably me, but I find the thought of nuns making and selling run a tad amusing.

Other cities that are close by and interesting:
Puebla--lots of churches (I like the architecture)
Cholula--archaeology
Xochitécatl-Pyramid

And I think the Guelaguetza is in July. It's at the stadium in Oaxaca and is a HUGE dancing celebration. Well worth going to.

Be sure to see the Zapotec ruins at Monte Alban and the Mixtec ruins at Mitla. I remember a small but spectacular museum of Mexican antiquities in town which once formed the private collection of painter Rufino Tamayo: Rufino Tamayo Museum Oaxaca

One warning: Mole, a culinary specialty of Oaxaca, is sometimes used to disguise bad meat. Then you can come down with the dread Oaxaca Caca as I did.

Hey,
Are you in Oaxaca right now? Have you been to Hierva la agua? That was my favorite. Also, a woman who lived by the entrance to hierva la agua made me the best juevos mexicanos I have ever eaten in my life.
My daughter and I are headed down soon. We're looking for accomodations also, pet friendly and cheap. If you have any ideas please let me know.
Have you been to Tehuantopec?
