How easy is it to get from Kauai to Honolulu. Turns out there is a direct flight from LA to Kauai but I then have to get to Honolulu to fly to Japan.
Is there a ferry, how long does it take, could I do it all in one day and make my connection or best to stop overnight in Honolulu?

Its a very quick plane ride, there are many, many island hopper flights. Right now it seems the ferry is only going between Maui and Honolulu but I didn't dig to far on the page. Really, flights are easy, often and fairly inexpensive and quick as well.

Kaua`i is pretty, but there's not much point in going unless you are going to relax and spend some time there.

I intend to be there for at least 5 days.
What is the hostel accommodation like?

In Kaua`i? I'm not sure how the hostels are. If I go it's either for work or to stay with friends. Or to camp. If you have a tent then Kaua`i is off-the-charts amazing.

You will probably want a car. There's no public transportation. Hitchhiking is a bit easier towards the north, and more difficult in the south.

Most backpackers base themselves in Kapa`a or Hanalei. Both are nice, though Hanalei probably has the edge. Lihu`e is nice enough, but not very interesting. Po`ipu is being razed to make room for condos and gated communities. Got there for a good cry, but don't stay there. I don't know if there are any accommodations further west than Po`ipu.

Problem with camping is that it's not so easy to meet people as in a hostel and as I am travelling RTW by myself it might help, although a week camping in nature can be good too Smile

ah, but the Na Pali Coast is different. It would be hard to do on a RTW trip, though ... you want equipment, and you would need to arrange to stash your bags somewhere. It's a pretty rough 11 mile hike to a remote valley, and once you're there there is a definite rainbow child vibe. Lots of naked stoned campers bathing in the waterfalls and communing with the land, that sort of thing.
