I'm taking a group of friends (9 of us, altogether) surfing about an hour south of Ensenada. We've booked rooms at Coyote Cal's, and are going to hit up beaches around the area for a few days. We've rented two cars and are going to drive together from San Diego.

I've been reading a TON about the troubles around Tijuana, including the well-publicized attacks on American tourists, especially between TJ and Ensenada. My friends are starting to get nervous, and the US State Dept.'s warning against travel in Baja Norte has spooked them further.

To placate them, I've devised an alternate route to Ensenada. If we leave from San Diego and head west to Tecate, then take Highway 3 south through wine country, should that keep us clear of the rough spots? Or, since we'll be traveling during the day, should we just plaw down the toll road and not worry?

If anyone can comment on this plan's validity, or suggest any other tips, I'd be greatful. I really don't want to have to change plans at this late date.
