I'll probably be going to the US in August, but I was wondering how much one can expect to pay for an average 20-pack of cigarets(sp?) and a beer in an American supermarket?
Even google was unable to help me there. |

Decent beer runs about $1.00 for 330 ml.
But don't buy your cigs here; buy a carton at Duty Free. A pack of smokes can easily set you back $5.00 here. |

Beer price of about $1.00 for 330 ml is pretty standard. Cigs will range in price from under $3.00 a pack to over $5.00. It all depends on where you are. Stock up when they are cheap.

$5.00 a pack is still better than the £5 ($8.70) we have to pay in the UK and they have just raised the price again by 9p in the budget.
We pay nearly a £1 ($1.75) a litre for petrol. We are taxed to the max. How much is petrol in the US (i can convert if you only know the price in gallons) Jim "Beware of the man who does not return your blow: he neither forgives you nor allows you to forgive yourself." George Bernard Shaw |

Gas is $2.60 a gallon where I live right now. Pretty crazy

Beer is what kills you though. When you go out to a decent bar you are paying $7 for an imported beer. Each

yeah, totally depends on where you are. Cigs are cheaper here than in the UK, anywhere from $3.20 to $5.00 a pack. As for beer...wow, really place to place. In maryland on the east coast my beers were $4 or $5 in a bar and here in LA they are $7 or $8. In NY they can be $10, in Alabama, 50 cents.

But still not as bad as the $7/gallon jimbobbill is paying. __________________________________________________________________________________ If women had any idea, even for a second, of how we really looked at them, they would never stop slapping us. Quit smoking. That's all I can say. Makes you sick and out of shape.

Depends where in the US you will be. Here in New York City, a pack of cigarettes can cost $7 or $8. I would agree with the recommendation to buy a carton of cigarettes at duty free.

$7 - $10 for a beer in a bar??? In the US?
You guys must mean a "club" or something. Live music? Airport? I've drank more than a couple of beers at bars all over the US, and the normal price for bottled beer is $2.50 - $3.25 for a Bud or similar, and less than $5 for most imports/microbrews. Often much less for draft, and during happy hour and other promotions. BTW, a really good comparison of the cost of living in different countries is: How many beers can you buy in a bar for 1 hour of your wages? US$20. equals about 2 in Japan, Norway, and Iceland, about 8 in the US, and about 40 in the Philippines. |

Here in SF, a bottle/draft of domestic will dun 3.50-4.50$. For an import or microbrew, you're looking at 4.50-5.50$. This is at a bar, not at a club, and this was as of yesterday when I was out. I remember being in NYC, and beer topping out around 6$...except at one club where it was a bit more. You can always find happy hours where beer and well drinks are much less. I have little idea about cigarettes, just that I have heard they are more expensive here (and really expensive in CA). |

Depending on when you go, you can get special prices that range from 99 cents to 1.99 for a beer.

Damn I need to move. That is insane. Nice bars in south beach can charge $10 to $12 or more for drinks. The bars where I live charge $7 for imported beers. I don't know why they charge so much but 1.99 or 2.50 for a beer is a distant memory

Yeah, it's easy to hit $7 for an import in NYC. And if you're in a nice shiny place with hip people, that can be a $6-7 Budweiser, too. They show no mercy - forget various Martinis. A six pack in a deli or supermarket will cost you $9-11 for something I'd like - about $6 for Budweiser.
Cigarettes are $7.50 - 8.50, depending on whether or not the deli guy is trying to shaft you for the extra dollar over the legal price... |

There's not a doubt in my mind that beer prices in bars are higher in downtown NYC or SF, but if you get out into the suburbs of even these cities, I'm sure they return to the $2.50-$3.50 range in most bars.

Or just become a pretty girl. Then the beer, mixed drinks and cigs are all the same low, low price of $0!
