Hello. I hope everybody is having a nice time thinking about faraway adventures from the comfort of your cubicle & work computer, just like me! I have decided that my destination for this summer will be Newfoundland and Labrador. I have scoured the bootsnall.com website and put together a word document using quotes from people who have commented on these places. But, I want to learn more. I am planning to fly to St. John's and rent a car to travel all over the place. Did you know there are islands off Newfoundland which are actually part of France? That is so cool. I bought a FROMMERS guidebook last night at a bookstore, so that is providing me with some helpful information. Since the most recent comments on Newfoundland on the website are all from 2004, I wanted to see if anyone is around now who can tell me what they think.

Is food and gas super-expensive there? When you travelled there, what did you do? Have you been on the ferry boats which connect the small fishing villages to one another?

Based on what I have learned in the past few hours, it looks as though I will be dressing very, very warmly for this trip. I would appreciate any and all guidance people can give me as far as websites, links, ideas, etc.

i am jealous

the lady at work form newfoundland said she travels back every year in August
weather wise it can get chilly
bring long sleeves and pants in case

driving all over the place is going to take time.
how much time do you have?
St Johns to the west side is like 9 hours straight

food at restaurants seems reasonable
if you're from a big city - it may seem cheap
food at the grocery store is more expensive but not that much

i stayed at 2 bed and breakfasts while in St Johns
reviews are on trip advisor
there are hostels there.....not sure how you travel

Gros Morne will be awesome
perhaps you can do the ferry crossing to Labrador

my trip was unfortunately limited to St John's for 5 days and it was awesome, even if it was in January
I hired the cook at the B and B to drive me around for 3 hours - went out to Cape Spear and to a couple of the fishing villages
i also hiked around the St John's area - the city had a brochure at the info booth building, somewhere downtown, and these paved hiking paths. ended up at Quidi Vidi. nice photos there - awesome photo opportunities everywhere

hopefully you can try all the great seafood - cod! - there as well as some traditional Newfoundland dishes. Cod tongue and cheeks, scrunchion, and there was a breakfast dish covered with molasses..........

Happy Travels!

Thank you very much for sharing this information with me. I also found a valuable website which is the official tourism website for Newfoundland and Labrador. You know you are going to a cold climate when you can buy a package for dog sledding in May.

I also found a few regional airlines, Air Saint-Pierre and Air Labrador, which offer a few flights per day. I am sure they are very expensive, but I do not know yet.

I will see about the hostels and hotels there. I will look on Trip Advisor. Thank you.

I hope that somebody comes along to give me some pointers. If nobody here can help me, would you please tell me where else I might look on the internet for advice from travelers (not just the official websites, but where I can talk with other people).

I can point out some things about Labrador, but not about Newfoundland(the island). Getting to Labrador would be very expensive, but if you have plans to visit there, please post here and I will pass along some info.

I am back again! Sorry it took me so long to read your message. I have concluded that there is very little tourism information to be had about visiting Newfoundland. It looks as though I have to stay in a hotel near the airport for over $100 because the flight gets in at 3 in the morning.

YES! I am planning to go to Labrador by driving there and taking a ferry. I will not go terribly far "inland" there, but I want to drive around and see something. Please share with me anything you are able to share. My friend was stationed in Happy Valley and I have heard about that place, but I am not going to be going that far inland.

Y'know, Newfoundland tourism for years ran ads that tell you to 'call Sean at 1-800-563-6353 for more information' (not always "Sean"...different ads aired with different names). I guess I remember that because I found that interesting little touch very welcoming. At any rate, perhaps if you gave them a call, they could point you to somewhere a bit more budget with 24 hour check-in.

I'm afraid I'm no Nfld expert, so I can't really help you out (only place I've been in the province is Wabush, Labrador), but it's one of those places that I would really like to visit at some point.

Hi Lorena!

Glad to hear that you are coming to NL this summer! I'm from St. John's and recently moved back home! I'm currently in Labrador (for work until Friday) and I don't have time to write you much at the moment....but PM me with any questions that you may have and I'll do the best that I can to answer them. If you are spending much time in St. John's then maybe I can show you around for a day - hike part of the east coast trail or maybe take a day trip out for a lighthouse picnic! Let me know....
Oh and when I get the chance to actually read through all of your posts, I'll try to answer some of your questions!

Cheers,
Danika
