I am a student planning on studying for a year in Paris. I'm interested in journalism and was wondering if anyone had any tips about finding an internship abroad. I would love to work for a magazine or newspaper while in Paris...any suggestions??

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I just began studying french, but I was planning on being in Paris for a semester, getting a grasp on the language, and then doing an internship second semester. do you think this is realistic? -Carolyn |

A good grasp of French will definitely help, although I assume you’ll want to intern for an English publication. If you work for free, that will improve your chances. Figure out which magazines and newspapers have offices in Paris, and bug the hell out of them!
Another possibility is to go the freelance route. Use that first semester at school to find some good stories. Then write them up and shop them around. You don’t even have to limit yourself to publications in France. If you get stuff published elsewhere, those are clips you can bring to the doorstep of the editors you’re bugging for internships! It’ll be proof that you can do the job. Good luck. |
