Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago

ok lately i've been thinking a lot about skipping spring quarter, which is three months long, to travel. well, work full time for one month and then backpack around nepal, india, tibet, and maybe bhutan (hah, i wish). or start from egypt and make my way down through all the cheaper countries and end up in south africa. problem is, i would have to be really lucky and get into all the classes i need for the following fall quarter so i won't delay my graduation for another year (the classes i need now are usually only offered once a year). it'd be a really tight squeeze, but there is a chance i can do it without screwing my 'timeline' up. also, i can't skip summer quarter without delaying my graduation for sure. but i really want to do this!

what do the rest of you students think?

oh btw, this isn't a question of 'should i save up and wait for an even bigger trip after i graduate??' - i plan to take an extended trip somewhere after i graduate regardless of whether or not i take this trip. Smile

id say talk to some in admissions or a guidance counsellor or somethign and see if it can happen. If it can, go for it, if not, then decide if youll have the money for the trip and whether or not itd be worth delaying your graduation. If you really cant decide, flip a coin, heads you stay, tails you go, if you get heads and you suddenly decide to go two out of three, go on the trip.

Well, on the one hand, I'm basically delaying my graduation by a year to do a year studying abroad, but this seems different. I don't think I'd do it at this point. I'm getting to the same point that it sounds like you are, where there are some very specific (and infrequently taught) courses that I need, and not getting into one of them can have big repercussions. If your experience has been anything like mine, you know what can happen at a big school. A teacher can go on sabbatical, have a baby, have cancer, etc., or a course can be cancelled or have a time conflict with another. Your trip sounds incredible, but if you want to do everything you can to avoid being in school another year, it just sounds like too big a risk.

Do it!

I decided about two months ago that I'm taking off spring semester and going traveling. I'm taking about $7000 dollars and leaving for like 6-7 months...although I don't know where yet. Probably in asia somwhere. I'm looking for someone to travel with too...so if you interested drop me a line at supermanpb2001@yahoo.com

I'm only a freshman in college though...so it's not really going to delay my graduation a whole lot. I just want to take some time to get away and see the world before I commit to four more years of school, plus I'm an art major...so I think it will help inspire me some.

Peace,

Caleb

Caleb-

I'm an Art Education Major, where do you get all the funds to take a trip? This question can be addressed to anyone for that matter...

Thanks,

Jen

I would highly recomend taking a semester off to do ANYTHING different, even if it is not "trveling" I did that a year ago, ended up totally changing majors (from History to Nursing) and schools and am really happy. Time off from the Rat race of school is just as important as time off from the Rat race of work etc.
