So I'm trying to figure out the best options... I'm doing my post grad study at a school in Amsterdam. I'm looking at being there for 3 years, and obviously you can't book return flights that far in advance. It's likely I'd come back before then for a visit, though I'd have no clue of when yet, and probably not before at least a year, which again you can't book further in advance of.
I'd go with just a 1 way, but wonder if I'd be hassled by customs. As an American, I don't apply for a student visa until after actually being in the country for good. So when they ask me how long I'm going to stay, and I say 3 years before actually having a resident card, will I get any shit about it? Are there any flex date options I'm not thinking about? I suppose a fully refundable ticket, but I'm still trying to keep costs down... __________________________________________________________________________________ If women had any idea, even for a second, of how we really looked at them, they would never stop slapping us. I know when i went to UK on a WHV, BA offered 15 months return tickets which could be purchased through STAtravel and I could change the return date once for no fee and after that i think it cost 25 pounds... it worked out pretty cool!

I would be more inclined to have your documentation in respect to studying rather than finesse over air tickets.
If you have a course position offer from the Dutchies and have accepted etc., when you enter the EU on a one way, unless you do get a 12 month or whatever return (and dutchies are allegedly in the more relaxed brigade) if you were asked at all about your intent, the answer can be you are starting a course at whatever University, and if you have documentation to verify it, it would be end of story. |

I flew to Australia on a one-way ticket with a two year student visa in my passport. No problems. If you are legally allowed to be in the country for two years without having to leave, there is no reason why a one-way ticket won't work. That is, there is no way a one-way ticket shouldn't be fine except for meeting some border control person on a power trip, having just been dumped by someone who looks remarkably like you.

i dont think it would be a problem. i have never been asked to see a return ticket all of the times i have entered into european countries. and, i actually flew in and out of amsterdam on an expired visa by 4 months and they didn't notice.
