Hi, im 18 and just graduated from High school. I am taking a year off to travel, possible R.T.W. Ive been to Europe once and New Zealand 6 or 7 times, so im not completly clueless. I really want to travel in some 3rd world countries, but im parinoid about safety, Health. If anyone can give me advise and words of wisdom about Nepal(maoist), India(health, personal safety) and South Africa, Tanzania, it would be much appreciated. Confused

Hey skibum, welcome to the boards. I myself, have been to none of these places, but ive looked into the forums here. No matter what question you have about what topic or place, theres a spot for it here. Check out the different forums, just post a topic and ask, the people here will be more than happy to help. Good luck to ya.

i'd talk to bear about nepal (i think he's in pakistan by now), madhu about india (she went to india and SE asia for a year or so), and donovan about tanzania (he used to live there). i'm not sure who's been to s africa.. i remember livenomadic mentioning something about his fiance going there not too long ago but that's about it. good luck!

I've been in India, I've not done the others.

India will probably give you permanent diarrhea because of all the different stomch bugs they've got. I had a cast iron stomach in Guatemala and other poor places, but India did me in. I still enjoyed it, but be aware. it's a very interesting place, and very educational. Travelling in India can be work, but rewarding work.

I don't recommend extensive anti-diarrheea medicine because the bacteria are endemic, and you need to flush them out.

If you go to India, if you go South, try and make it there in Nov- February. The oppressive heat and humidity can take half a day away from every day of visiting things.

Need more specific questions for more specific answers.
