I am a third year grad student in Cognitive Psychology, specifically studying perception and action in people with visual impairments. Ever since before I entered grad school, I have wanted to live in India for a substantial amount of time and now I am wondering how I can fulfill this desire through my research interests. I would like to go to India for at least a semester and work in a lab, but I'm not sure how feasible this is and how to even start looking into it. I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and has combined the desire to travel with research interests. Is it better to take time off after grad school? Any advice would be appreciated!!

I am actually going to France next semester (researching) and finishing my last semester of grad school. I was able to receive a fellowhsip that is paying for my schooling and giving me a stipend for the time that I will be there. I talked to a Professor and he was able to give me information regarding different grant and fellowship opportunities. I would suggest talking to your professors and see if they have any information regarding grants and such. In addition if you have a study abroad office I woudl visit them and see if they have any information. A lot of times they have info for grad students there just aren't that many people interested so they don't advertise.

if you haven't done so already.. start looking up the major universities in india and just start emailing the professors there.

universities in india

if everything else fails, my lab supervisor originally got her post-grad degree in india. i could ask her if she knows of anyone when she gets back, but i'm not sure if she'd know anyone working in the area of cog-psych (since we're in a virology lab).

have yo uthought about post-doc fellowships abroad?

Thanks for your suggestions. I have skimmed some of the information from the study abroad office, but their programs involve taking classes, which I'm not so keen on. But it still might be good to go with a more structured program. I guess the first decision is whether to go now or as a post-doc. I haven't looked at universities in India yet, so thanks for the link xoom!
