Holds PhD in Packing |
Man you Americans really do have it hard, you dont get anything cheap (or free). If your a UK/EU Citizen tuition fees for undergrad in the UK are only £3000 per year, and you get this prepaid with a income assessed student loan (not a normal loan, you only pay back a certain amount depending on your future income). I cant imagine having to pay 10s of thousands of $$. Do only the rich in America manage to go to college? Or they get left with over $100000 worth of dept?

I did my whole MA for 7500 pounds with a British university while I was living in Japan. I chose the part-time distance learning route as I felt for Applied Linguistics/TESOL it made more sense to be working in a real teaching environment rather than with theoretical students. The only problem I've had with it is that I had to get my degree verified at the college I'm teaching at in New York. Essentially this entailed paying someone $90 to go on-line, say "Yup, Leicester's a real school," and stamp a piece of paper with an official seal. Still 7500GBP (when the exchange rate was about $1.40 to the pound) + $90 is a hell of a lot cheaper than I could have got here.

Sells "travel" by the gram |
the cynicism wants me to say that, sure you can get a degree in another country like England, but if you are doing it to avoid the steep costs of school in America is fine, but I feel like companies will be very curious as to why you got your degree in the UK as opposed to a solid university in America...with that said, I'm sure its fine, but the way that the pound is going, living costs might end up equaling getting a MA in Creative writing from a city or state university in which you reside...
Also some businesses won't accept MA's from other countries so I'd be on the look out for that...Now granted this is for creative writing, probably for personal use more than working for a company, just my own fyi Josh is off to Europe soon, but in the meantime read about his past trips around the world I'm 24, why isn't 100 countries and 7 continents realistic in a lifetime...40 and 5 down... |

I have been living in London for the last three months while I earn my MA in Creative Writing. Going to grad school here is the best decision I have ever made. No one gets a MA in Creative Writing because someone is going to hire you to write a book - that just won't happen, but getting any masters in London just looks great on a resume period. I've worked for Apple and 20th Century Fox in the past and all other things being egual we tended to pick people who had some worldy experience. The experiences I have had and the contacts I have met are worth ten times what I will pay. I have not only met many world-renowned authors, I have met leaders in international business too. It all just depends on how much you make of your experience here. As for the cost of living - London is the 2nd most expensive city on the planet and the GBP/US exchange rate sucks for Americans, but still, it is worth it. Now this will vary with everyone, but I have actually saved money moving to London (I used to live in Chicago). I bike everywhere and own no car anymore. That saves me $400 a month right there. I no longer eat out, I cook all my food at home and am in better shape than I ever have been. I can buy 7 days worth of food for about £35 (or $70) a week. I have a part time job where I work 10 hours a week and make about £100 which is more than enough for food and entertainment. I don't need to pay health insurance because I am covered under the NHS. If anyone is thinking of making the move to London for grad school, DO IT! I mean, just look at me! I'm the guy who started this topic almost two years ago and now here I am doing fine. |

How much do you reckon it's costing you a month? Including everything, like rent, tuition, books and everything? |

My monthly breakdown:
Food: £100 Rent: £461 (keep in mind I live in the center of London in the halls. It's cheaper the further out you go and everything is well connected by the tube). Transportation: £15 Mobile: £5 (I hardly use the phone and do a Pay as you go plan like most people do here. No monthly contract). Tuition: £220 Books: £10 Pint of beer: £3 Now multiple al the £'s by two to get the US dollar price.... For me my costs are $1622US a month. My cost of living in Chicago was $1950 a month (the biggest difference is here I have no car - they are such money wasters even if they are paid off). Check out my blog below. It's all about my time in London. Hope this helps! |

Can anybody give me some good resources to schools in Europe, especially ones in Great Britain? I am hoping there is a resource site that is a little easier to use then simply typing what you want into google and sifting through all the sites =-/

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread! I'm considering grad school in England or Ireland (or perhaps elsewhere in the EU) for Sept 2009.
The first step is making sure it's okay here (Canada) though! (I'm going to be doing, eventually, a doctorate in clinical psychology). But yeah... I'm also an Irish citizen, so I can go without the international rates! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Check out my new preparing to backpack Europe blog at http://traveljess.wordpress.com |

www.braintrack.com allows you to search for schools by country. I don't think it's totally comprehensive, but it's pretty good.

Sorry I'm a little late here, SuperKid. Here are some sites.
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/ShowPage/Home_page/p!eLaXi That's one good website for looking for courses in the UK and Ireland. postgradireland.com is good for Ireland. There's loads of sites like that, postgradasia.com is also good. findaphd.com is another one, and form that site you can get to its sister site findamasters.com Happy searching! |
