I'm not sure what you mean by minority. As a white male, in most of the places I've traveled, I've been a minority. I guess it's all a matter of context.

There was actually a similar thread started in around the world and vagabonding travel, and I think the wording was modified to be "those of us not normally considered a vagabonders" . There are some tips and insights there.
It's generally good not to double post, but as this one the poster chose to put in student travel, I made the decision to leave it. In fact, it's a topic that I think can often lead to disagreement about terms rather than practical tips, but as I think it is also a topic which people do have real questions about, it would be cool if people could share their experiences here as a resource. I'm white and had an experience in Slovakia where I lived and worked for a time...in a couple of cases people assumed I was from a neighboring country (actually one or two possibilities), rather than an English teacher from the US, and it seemed they didn't always feel happy to have "those people" there. Kind of a long story, and one that people may dismiss as me being oversensitive...but I'm pretty sure about this. I ended up making a point of speaking English, rather than trying to start out in Slovak, which is kind of too bad because it's nice to make an effort with the local language. Anyway, I'm not sure if this is what the OP is looking for but that's my experience. Make cay, not war - Kesmen |
