So those of you who've studied abroad, how much time did you spend traveling outside of your study abroad location? If you studied in Paris, how much traveling did you do around the European continent? In Sydney, how much of the rest of Australia did you see?

Aside from the day or weekend trips I took while studying in Sydney, I traveled for another three weeks once classes ended. I flew from Sydney to Cairns and then traveled back down the coast, flying home from Sydney. That's all of Australia I got to see. I never made it to Melbourne or Perth or Adelaide. Oh and part of my study abroad program included a week or so in Canberra. Now that was exciting.

I've been in Barcelona since August 2004, and I've travelled by car for one week in Spain, I stayed ten days in Belgium, with a day trip to the Netherlands, and another to Luxembourg, ten days in Germany, and 6 days in Stockholm.

I havent done as much as I'd hoped, but that's all right.

I've really lucked out with my coop's. When I lived in Germany Dresden just happened to be a place that many trains terminated or originated. I was able to take night trains all over Europe, often without having to switch in the morning. I also only worked 4 days a week. That first summer I was able to get to 11 countries. I lived in Germany for 13 weeks. I also traveled a few weeks before and after my trip.

For my coop in London (6 months) I also lucked out with location. You can fly anywhere from London for next to nothing. Also, I traveled quite a bit for free with my job so I spent a lot of time all over the UK. I managed to hit an additional 9 countries, I did however return to a few that I had been to before. I had three day weekends every other weekend. It was a nice deal.

In my year in Germany I made it to:

*Austria
*Italy
*the Czech Republic
*Denmark
*Sweden
*Luxemburg
*France
*England
*Belgium and
*all over the rest of Germany

I was fortunate to have a really half assed exchange program that never checked up on us so I spent over 2 months travelling instead of being in school.

I studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia.

I stopped in Fiji overnight, to and from Australia. The airfare was about $50 cheaper, so it was a great way to break up an awfully long flight.

While I was in Melbourne I took 2 trips down the great ocean road, to the 12 apostles. The first time we rented a car and stopped over night in a little beach town along the way. The second time we just rented a car and drove there and back in one day. These were both weekend trips.

I took another weekend and went camping on the mornington peninsula. It only costs a few dollars to get there by the train and bus. It is beautiful!!

Over Easter break I took an extra week of school and traveled for 2 weeks along the east caost. I went to Brisbane, Surfer's Paradise, and Byron Bay.

I traveled for another 2 weeks at the end of my semester. I went to Sydney, Cairnes, and the Whitsunday Islands.

I wanted to stay longer, but the next flight available home would have been after my school back in the states started. So unfortunately I had to leave Frown

So all in all I traveled for about 5-6 weeks for the 6 months that I was there.

I would have loved to get up to Norther Territory, Alice Springs, and Perth, but time and funds would not allow me to. Next time Smile

I did a semester in Brisbane, Australia...

Travelled down the east coast from Cape Tribulation back down to Brissie (1.5 wks); had a trip to Fraser Island (went there twice - 1 weekend trip); a side weekend trip to Noosa; a side week long trip to Byron Bay; New Zealand for 3 weeks (right after the semester ended), Sydney for a week. I unfortunately had a deadline to be home, Christmas, so I had couldn't spend as much time travelling after the semester as I had wanted to.

did a semester in Spain, and basically traveled all around the country except for Galaica and went to Morocco and Portugal. By the way, I would highly recommend that if you go abroad, make a local friend. You'll experience way more of the culture than if you just hung out with the eramus kids all the time. Even though, they are a riot!!!

When I studied abroad I traveled almost every weekend. I tink that I only stayed in Brussels (where I was staying) three weekends. We had class on Mon and Tue and our internships on Wed and Thu, this allowed us to leave Thursday night for wherever you want to go. I purchased a three month eurail pass and spent most of my time travelling by train. By myself (and with friends) I visited:
France
Netherlands
Denmark
Spain (Spring Break: Madrid, Barcelona, Costa del Sol and Morrocco)
Italy
Germany (a lot of it, I got really lost)
Czech Republic
And then because my program was amazing we had trips built into our program fee. These trips always involved us visiting some place of interest (ex. World Bank...). But, they were really interesting and we always had free time.
All over Belgium and Brussels
Luxembourg
Germany
Switzerland
and the coup d'etat: a 12 day trip which included: Cyprus, Hungry, Slovenia, Croatia, and Germany.

I would suggest traveling while you are abroad it is a ton of fun and who knows when you will be back with no responsibilities.

I spent a week in Thailand and then headed to China afterwards.

During the term we did weekend trips - there really isn't a lot to see in Korea, and it isn't accessible to anywhere else by land because of the North!

I studied abroad in Madrid for a semester and I took an 18 day spring break trip around France and Italy. Other than that I spent a weekend each in London, Lisbon, & Tangiers. I travelled all around Spain on 1-2 day trips (some longer) to get to know each part of the country.

Something that's easy to forget though when you go abroad is it's really important that you spend a lot of time in the country you're living in. Realistically, you are probably going to see all the major cities in Europe one day anyway, so take advantage of the opportunity you have to live in a place, not just visit it. Even though I lived in Madrid and spent plenty of time out with my friends there, I ended up not seeing half of the cultural sites in the city until the very end of my 6 months when I added on two extra weeks to my trip to spend solely in Madrid.

If you are keen to travel id say the best bet is to buy a stop over ticket. I have studied in Japan twice and purposely chosen a stop-over flight both times. They are usually alot cheaper and you can see two places for the price of one.

The first time I flew with Vietnam Air and stayed in Saigon.
This time I will be flying with Pacific Air and Staying in Fiji on the way back.

As far as Japan goes i have visited 21/47 prefectures

I was in a very controlled program - 20 US Interns in the Irish Parliament, worked 2 days, class 2 days, all together at the Institute for Public Administration, so I couldn't skip class to travel or anything like that.

That being said, I did go around Ireland a bit on weekends and also took two weekend trips to London and one to Italy. The program also included an organized (but not really "structured" or "supervised") week-long trip to Belgium and Paris, a weekend trip to Belfast and an overnight trip to a hotel for Thanksgiving.

(For anyone interested, Catholic, Northeastern and DePaul are the only Uni's who participate in this program, we did have one girl from a TX uni who registered through Catholic though.)

While studying in Sydney I made it to Brisbane and Byron Bay for 5 days, Melbourne (twice), New Zealand for 10 days, Tasmania (5 days), Perth and Sw Oz (10 days), Canberra (3 days), Cairns (1 week) and a host of other, smaller places. I went through Arcadia, which sucked.

I'm currently studying abroad in Rome, Italy. I spent three weeks more or less before the semester started in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and England. Since the start of the semester, I've been to France, Spain, northern Italy (Venice, Florence, Assisi, and other small cities), and Hungary. I've currently plans to return to Germany, Poland, and England between now and the end of the semester.
