hey,
i'm turning 26 just around the time i'll be departing for my trip this summer around europe. i'll also be graduating grad school just prior to my departure. my question is, do you think i can use my student id when i'm in europe. it's summer so i don't think they would not believe that i'm a student on a traveling holiday or whatever, but my school does stamp each semester on there (so they would just see "spring 05" as the latest stamp).

what do you think?

Get an ISIC, maybe? They're good through the end of the year - so get one in January and you won't have to worry about it.

On the other hand, I have never had anyone look too closely at my student ID (one of which I used for 2 years after graduating).

You can still use it, but an ISIC is a good bet too, and more easily recognizable. Smile

heck yeah, use the ISIC as long as you can!!! Smile I graduated in 2001, and..er..have one for this year (was a student in the Spring!)

But of course, now you can't pass for any 25 and under discounts.

seconding what everyone else says; get an ISIC. If you've got a local STA store, you can get an ISIC on the spot.

Also, some places will check the year on your ID. My school puts on year stickers, but I always forget to get one put on, so my ID doesn't have a year on it. I had one woman in Canada who almost didn't give me the (significant -- $4 or $6) discount because I didn't have a year validation on my ID.

However, I'd say go ahead and use whatever ID you have. Most places aren't too picky. When I went to Ireland, I had lost my ISIC card (quite sad situation, really). I used my library card from the University of Leiden (Netherlands) as my "student ID," and everyone accepted that.

Heck yeah!! I used my college ID for a long time after I graduated and would have kept using it if I hadn't lost my wallet (at the first airport of my RTW, by the way). If your ID has a date on it, it might be harder though.

The ISIC is a good choice and you can even find a way to get one if you aren't a student any more.

I've got the same problem as cherie with my student card which expires in March 2006 - about 3 months before the end of my RTW trip. I've got an ISIC card which lasts until March 2006 as well.

I'm worried coz I bought RTW plane tix on student fare and have been told they check student ID's at check-in. If they do, I won't have anything to show for my flights after March 2006.

Have you guys had experience with airlines asking for student ID's for student fare tix at check-in (esp in Europe and Asia)? And anyone care to share how to get an ISIC card even when you're no longer a student? (discreet PM's will be welcome! Wink )

I'm so glad you posted this question! I'm in the same boat -- will be turning 26 next spring and also graduating with my Masters. I'm hoping to do some serious traveling and was wondering what I'd do about cards (e.g., how closely they'd check). If I booked flights as a student and under 26, what happens when I'm 26 and no longer a student when I actually traveled?
